I live in northeren California Zone 9 where it has been unseasonably warm and the forcast doesnt look much different many of my maples are pushing buds if this was March I would fertilize to encourage growth but now I'm not sure what to do any suggestions?

Are they in the ground? If so, fertilizing is likely unnecessary. And if grown in containers, you can still wait until March to fertilize......a few weeks makes no significant difference.

Otherwise, I'd just leave them alone. My containerized JM's are pushing buds now as well. And all of my hydrangeas!!

If they aren't well mulched that is always a good idea.

Mulching around the containers can reduce the possibilities of cold damage but mulching over the top is of little consequence and is often counterproductive to containerized plants in that mulching impeded fast drainage.

It is important to remember that plants in containers cannot and should not be treated in the same manner as those growing in the ground.
