Ikea Kitchen 12" Base Cabinet

Has anyone had any luck modifying/"hacking" the 12 inch base cabinet that ikea offers? I wanted to have a utensil pullout similar to what other manufacturers offer but I don't like the wood look since it won't match the maximera drawers I'll be using throughout the rest of the cabinets. I'm wondering if I can just cut the hole and purchase the bins/cups to insert in there.

Seems reasonable, but I would add a thickness to the bottom of the drawer with some pin nails in from the sidewalls of the drawer. Search for "hotel pans", that's the type of holder you might be looking for. Square deep ones are easy to find, round less common but probably out there

Hi liv_a0713, did you have any success with this hack? I'm interested in learning how others have modified the 12" cabinet, as I think I'll need to use one next to my range...

I found the 12" excellent for cleaning supplies, especially spray bottles on the bottom shelf.

IMO it might make the most sense to install the pullout you really want, most likely from Rev a Shelf, in the Ikea cabinet box. I know you are worried that the wood is different from the white Maximera inserts but that won't necessarily be something that people notice or that would look bad. It's likely to look and work better than an Ikea part that has been cut and modified. If it really bothers you, you could always paint the wood white? A semi-gloss Super White paint would probably be a good match to the Maximera parts.

If I could add a video I would but it actually works perfect and was way cheaper than the $185 + tax rev a shelf and it matches the rest of my kitchen.

Does this seem to be holding up well? Do you prefer it to storing utensils horizontally in a drawer with the IKEA separators/organizers? Trying to plan our kitchen now and seems like this style drawer makes sense minimally for oil/vinegar, maybe spices and utensils, too. Thanks!

@liv_a0713, I know this is an old post but I'm wondering how your hack is holding up. I'm considering doing something similar in an 18" wide cabinet as we had the vertical utensil storage in our custom built cabinets at our last house and would like to have it again in our IKEA cabs. It looks like a pretty simple hack but I wasn't sure if you reinforced the bottom of the drawer you cut or not. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Shead, it’s held up great with no issues. It’s not reinforced and I have 0 issues with sagging or anything like that. This is a picture of it now. Excuse my mess :) let me know if you have any other questions

    Hi liv_a0713.

Your post has been very useful I was wondering if you could help me with some information. I want to know what the "base" width of the inside of the drawer is - that is taking into account the "angled" base of the drawers.

I have a specific use in mind so need "B" at least a specific width. If you could provide me with width's "A" & "B" then I can work out how much those angled bits take up. I ask for both because I plan to use the 20cm fittings (link), whereas I think you have used the 30cm ones.

    Any help, hugely appreciated!

    Thanks,
