Try pulling the rug out a bit. Then move the chair to the right and angle it towards the sofa. Play up the light colors with light green/yellow/cream throw pillows.

This is a very traditional room based on the massive fireplace. I think you have too much brick there, suggest you paint it. Also, remove furniture from walls, center in middle of room and perhaps a narrow console against window to create a nice flow-through the room balanced by more cozy fireside seating. Art??

This is a common dilemma for folks today: not knowing whether to make a living room a TV or just sitting room. If you have another option for a t.v. room, I'd like to see this stay a living room. I would simply add a second chair directly across from the one you have now with a floor lamp and small table on the end of the couch. I would look for a pretty piece of art to go over your console. You could keep your orchid, but just pull it to one side. Can you post a close up picture of your rug? I think different pillows, along with a lumbar pillow for the chair, might help as well.

A matching end table (with matching lamp) on this end of the sofa would be a better place to put your plant and enable you to see whatever art you put on the wall behind your sideboard. Find some art that really appeals to you and could add some much needed color and personalization to the room. It doesn't even need to be a framed picture -- there are other options. One might be to add some modern shelving on the wall above your sideboard for displaying family treasures.

There are also some really nice large pressed metal pieces that create interest -- perhaps one of those might suit your taste and be suitable for the large blank span of brick to the right of the fireplace without interfering with viewing the tv -- that is what is in the wood cabinet to the right of the fireplace?.

Agree with the post of another that you might consider centering the rug -- moving it a few inches closer to the hearth -- and turning the chair a bit more toward the fireplace and tv as well. As you do this, you might consider moving the sideboard to the right closer to the door.

I moved the rug over and I put chair in front of brick to right of fireplace. I agree that room needs color etc. I want to get rid of the server as it doesn’t go I just needed to put something g there and The rug. I’d also like to paint the walls. I just don’t know what exact color (I’d like a light gray/blue) or what rug. Dark CEO’s server or would that compete w floor and brick?

jpp21- I can go two ways with the room as we are going to remodel our kitchen. I can either make the room a casual dining room/area and make my living room (which is behind this room) my everyday family room OR I can keep it a family room with a tv as is. Im going to post more pics to try to get a better idea for you.

I like that is open somewhat to the kitchen but I don't like the bowling alley effect is has going on.

Plants always make a room feel a little more cozy and welcoming. Especially if there's an eye-catching plant. Something like a dwarf lemon, calomondin or avocado tree could be really neat!

Your room seems to be a work in progress. We recommend that you put a large plant or lamp in the corner, pull the rug out from under the sofa more, add artwork over the cabinet in the back, and get pillows that go with your color scheme.

It will all depend on what you decide what the room will be used for. When deciding, take into consideration your daily activities and what will best fit your family's needs. I think a reading room could work, you can have two lounge chairs, a lamp and a side table in front of the fireplace and it will give you a really cozy look.

Before you paint or white wash brick, do remember that anything painted or whitewashed will inevitably need to be repainted and can begin to look really awful when it does. Wouldn't paint or white wash brick.

it feels empty on the walls, some art possibly even creating a "U" shape with couches. a lamp would be a nice touch too.
