If you perform a Google search for “Karran sink grid” you will find that they do make and sell sink grids. Their web site is not all that helpful.

Their stainless sinks are 18 gauge. You might want to price out a 16 gauge sink from another manufacturer as well.

This is the grid for the E-520. It seems really unusual to me - should I be worried that crud would get stuck in it more because there is more surface area to this than the typical grid?

Well, it depends. Will stuff stick to it more? Absolutely. But then you’ll clean it more often, so you’ll have the cleanest sink grid in your neighborhood. I’d worry more about the 18 gauge, but that’s just me. The thicker stainless of 16 gauge would be preferable, but then I’ve never known a stainless sink to fail.

fact about installing ten times more 540s is very interesting, and with
non-sloping sides, it probably gives a lot more internal room than the 340. To be honest, I like the 540 better anyway. The only reason I was interested in the 340
was to fit it in a 30" base, as things are getting very tight with my plans
for my small kitchen. I assume the the
540 can fit in is a 33" base, but Ikea doesn't make a 33". It looks like I'll have to venture out to other cabinet makers now.

Katie, just out of pure curiosity, is there something you don't like about the 440?

That's a good question, stillpitpat. I did look at the 440, and it seems like a very nice sink. But I didn't see that it had any advantage over the 540. My issue is that I'd like to use Ikea but that they don't make a 33" sink base - which is the max size I can fit with my current layout plans. The 440 is 1/2" shorter in width than the 540, but that didn't seem like enough of a difference to make it be able to fit in a 30" base next to a dishwasher. But I have not spoken to a contractor about that yet - I'd love to hear that I am wrong. The 440 is also 1 1/4" shorter in length, and all other things being equal, I'd rather have the greater length - if one fits in a smaller base than the other, that would certainly change the equation.

Another option I am playing with is seeing if I could buy a 33" sink base from Scherr's - who I am considering to do all my cabinet fronts anyway - and then have all the other cabinets from Ikea. That may work because the sink base does not have another base next to it on either side. I know you and I are doing many similar things, so I'd be happy to tell you my progress and what I find out, if you like.

The 440 will fit according to Joe (above). I only have 30" which is why I'm going with the 440. Plus it's a bit cheaper.
Not that you shouldn't get the 540, I was just hoping there wasn't something negative about the 440 that I didn't know.

Thanks for the link, stillpitpat - that is good news! It makes me wonder two things:

(1) Ikea's 30" base has 3/4" sides, so I was assuming that the interior dimension is 28 1/2", making it necessary to scoop both sides to fit the Karran 440, which as an interior dimension of 29 1/2". I don't have a problem with doing that and voiding the warranty, but I thought I read somewhere that you can't scoop the side next to the dishwasher or you wouldn't have proper support for the counter. I can't find that thread now, so hopefully I was mistaken about that.

(2) Joe says that with a 1" build-up, we don't even have to cut the cabinet tops to have it fit. I wonder if it matters if we decide to get only a 1/2" build-up (for a more contemporary look) instead.

Perhaps Joe will illuminate us - though I hate to bug him, as he has already helped a great deal. I probably wouldn't even have seen the beauties of Corian without his posts.

Hmm. I had not heard that about the sink/DW placement issue. That makes me wonder.

When you strap a sink, you are replacing the scooped cabinet sides with 10" of triangulated 18 gauge vertical steel. You can imagine which is strongest.

Joseph, both stillpitpat and I would like to have Corian with the largest integrated Karran SS sink we can fit into a 30" Ikea base. The interior dimension of the Karran 440 is 29 1/2", so to make it fit, we'd have to scoop the sides of the Ikea base, which has an interior dimension of 28 1/2". Since the integrated Karran sink is adhered to the Corian, there typically wouldn't be a need to strap the sink. Do I understand correctly above, that that you would recommend strapping in this instance in order to make the scooped cabinet stronger and more able to support the countertop?

No need to strap with the Karran even if you have to scoop the cabinet sides to get it it fit.
