What do you like to do? Do you entertain, play board games, garden, read, etc.? I see a bunch of possibilities but it should be used for something you enjoy.

i have never heard of false doors. I love your rug and how you plan to use the room.

i think that you should place the chair in the center, as opposed to on the wall. will you need another chair?

have you thought of moving the whole space to the middle of the room? you could have the back of the sectional to the door and use a console table behind it as your welcome table.

It seems a shame to have the sofa facing away from the windows and door. I'm not sure whether these options would work:

--Flip sofa so it faces windows and door with two comfy armchairs and a small round table on the other side of the space for games, having tea and wine, etc.

--Float the sofa and rug in the middle of the room. I know you'll block the door, but give it a try to see if that will be a problem. Have bookshelves and art on both sides of the room. Maybe add an upholstered chair up on legs angled towards the sofa.

--Keep sofa as is. On the other side of the room add two upholstered chairs and small round table.

Thank you everyone for your helpful suggestions! We thought about our interests and what would work best for the area, and that we do need more seating. After some trial and error, we found a big comfy papasan chair and footrest, and put that over a new rug with some big plants and a lamp. We're going to work on hanging more artwork and rearranging the living room when we refinish the hardwoods this summer, but it looks so much better in the "blank" area already. I will post a picture later, but I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for taking the time to answer an internet stranger :)
