Do you have very close neighbors? I ask this because just yesterday I heard this loud crashing sound and I thought it was something in the basement, went running down to see what happened because I was washing clothes and thought it was the washer. Well, it ended up being the neighbor had thrown something very heavy into his large trash can. Those huge trash cans they give you so the trash truck can lift it into the truck. Anyway, he keeps it just outside of his garage and goes out and throws bottles and stuff in it. His garage is not very far from our house.

The closest neighbors weren't in the direction of where the sound seemed to come from. As best I can tell, it came from the center of house. My best guess is that it had something to do with the relatively new composite deck, or with the attic fan that's now not working, but was definitely working a day or two before the crash.

I'll mention one other noise I heard in the house a few years back that took me a couple of weeks to get to the bottom of. The short version is that the ring that attaches the blades of a ceiling fan to the motor broke away. The ring and blades had fallen a few inches and were just sitting on top of the lights below it. The fan is on a cathedral ceiling, so it's up and out of sight. It didn't realize anything had happened to it until I tried to turn on the fan, and there was no spinning going on. I'm lucky the whole fan didn't come down.

I did hear a crash in the house the other day...but then I went to the store room where the kitty boxes are and Mila -- she's always the trouble maker -- knocked a box off the shelf and that's what I heard.

In another thread somewhere that I don't really want to link to, I described an experience I had where I felt a heavy weight drop on my back while in bed. I thought I was awake and the person with who I was sharing a room was assaulting me. But it was one of those weird dreams within a dream and I wasn't awake at all. It wasn't a loud noise, but a truly terrifying physical sensation. So I do believe that during sleep, even if partial sleep, our minds can play tricks.

A few weeks ago I heard a very loud noise in the narrow side yard between my house and my neighbor's. It was an odd noise that I couldn't identify. I looked around and didn't see anything awry, so I forgot about it. I later found out it was an earthquake. I didn't feel it, but I heard it.

I never figured out what mine was, and have to assume it was the composite deck.

Ok, so my creepy sun baby is now nonsensical, but someone resurrected this thread to describe odd noises in their home heard as they were watching a "scary" Teletubbies film. Hence my post above -- but the other post is now gone. Just FYI. 😁

HU-16305764098- your experience seems so similar in many ways to mine, and as creepy . Since my original post, I've had several additional episodes all while fully awake. Awake but if i recall correctly, ALL while in bed. That seems interesting and curious and statistically relevant to me. Only once was there a logical explanation, when the shower curtain and rod fell down. I now regret not writing down details each time, but plan to do so going forward. HU, are you planning to call a priest or someone? I think if the incidents happened more frequently, I'd be inclined to call someone dealing with the paranormal, but enough time lapses in between that I forget about it until it happens again. I haven't noticed any increase in frequency. I'm sorry this has happened to you, but it feels a little oddly comforting to know someone else understands through a similar encounter with the unknown.

My current house is newish, but I have begun to understand how much of a "living, breathing entity" it actually is. It's well-constructed and energy efficient, but still tends to slightly "sigh with movement" depending on weather/temperature/pressure changes. Of course this doesn't bring about big shifts in items, but if (for example) a shower curtain tension rod were to fall, I would attribute it to the "life" exhibited by the construction of the house itself. YMMV.

Oh Ida, I was relieved to find the shower rod down, as there was a reason for that loud crash! It actually never occurred to me that would be anything but a logical reason for that letting go - it wasn't tight enough, or the spring was defective or something....not that something other-worldly caused it!

As someone stated above, I blame pretty much all unexplained noises on the cats. The other night we had guests staying with us due to the winter storm, and I slept on the sofa in the living room. I kept hearing a thunk, thunk, THUNK, and then a rattle-creak-PING. I got up to find that Tonto had opened the kitchen cabinets and was happily prowling around amongst the pots and pans.

Yesterday there was a horrible crash that sounded like the ceiling above the fridge was crashing in. I wanted to blame the cats, but they were nowhere in sight. DH calmly told me that it was a large chunk of ice that broke off from the roofline above and hit the roof below. I still can't imagine that ice could've made such an earth-shaking noise, but it obviously did. Yikes.

So I don't have to read all the replies, have you researched your house to see if any deaths have occurred there if it wasn't new when you moved in? Also, find who the previous owners were and do a google search on their names.

I know our two acres are haunted in a really bad way but I can't find anyone to help me. I did see a ghost one night when I tried out some new night vision binoculars, a man all in white, was sitting down in the same position Abe Lincoln is at the Memorial, sans chair.

After we built on ten years ago I used to get those 3 scratch marks on me about twice a year for several years in a row. One was on my forehead. They finally stopped. The kind of long scratches that look like a cat got me good. I'd know if a cat got me. That's the devil's marking apparently.

So many bad things began shortly before we added onto the house and got worse after we remodeled and built on and hasn't stopped.

What I do know is the spot where we built the house (in the country, in the middle of nowhere), and added onto the house, there used to sit a house built well over a hundred years ago. The elderly man who sold it to us 40 years ago said the family would have dances here on weekends and how much fun they had. They were a very prominent family in our town but no one is left who would know of any stories from a hundred years ago.

I've even cleansed it with sage.

The other night I heard something really loud in the kitchen after we'd gone to bed. Scared me. It was just Wolf counter-surfing and found a small pan that I heated up some stew in that he knocked on the porcelain tile floor. :)

Oakley - You saw a ghost sitting and received unexplained scratches? Good grief! The for sale sign would be out front in no time for me! It was special to me to meet the sellers, an elderly couple who lived in this house since it was built. in the 50's Unfortunately one of them died out of state shortly before or after the closing. The house inside is largely unrecognizable due to extensive renovations; it was over a year before I moved in. I'm hoping I've heard the last of bizarre noises. Wait - your unexplained noises haven't stopped?

Let's see, the husband died shortly after closing. I'd get a Priest. lol

No strange noises except the dog and pan. It's things that happen, pets dying one after the other, healthy one moment, deathly the next. We lost two dogs in ONE day due to sudden illness, different breeds, one lived with DS behind us, the other lived with us. There've been serious illnesses, (under control at the moment) and a divorce in the family that still makes me cry. Other stuff, but it's seems to be one right after the other. I've seriously considered calling the local Priest. I'm not Catholic but both sons are and my late mom was. Does that count? :)

I’ve been reading this thread on and off for a while. Then and now. Frankly, it is so darn funny/weird, the jogs and turns it’s made! My own big crashes and what actually caused them:

• a mountain lion on my roof ran into our large HVAC unit
• we’ve had at least 4 ghosts here, one of which was fairly noisy on occasion. and actually had to get real, respected “ghost busters” out here to get rid of him!
• large ice chunks falling right outside our bedroom window in middle of the night
• wild horse knocking over my large wood bird feeder post in middle of the night
• black bear trying to eat my large ceramic duck in the middle of the night. It was on my front portal’s coffee table, poor thing!
• our resident 5 1/2-foot Bull Snake wrapping itself around my back ceramic birdbath and knocking it over

I know that a lot of people think that ghosts are a bunch of hog wash...but how does one explain a chair gliding across the dining room floor or a ceramic trinket being hurdled off of a shelf in a bedroom? Stuff like that happened to my sister and her family in a home they rented. My BIL is a preacher and is very respected and honest, they would never make stuff up!

Another really scary thing happened in a home that my BIL and SIL and family rented. Their son (he was pretty young) was sleeping alone in his bedroom and in the middle of the night something threw his mattress off of the bed with him on it and the radio came on and wouldn't turn off even when it was unplugged. My SIL went around the house praying and placed crosses above the doorways and after that, the incidences stopped. They also had the TV going on and off, all sorts of weird things happened in this one house. We stayed there a few times but never saw anything when we were there.

Wow Lynn it sounds like animal and ghost Central. Maybe you need regular visits from the reputable ghost busters. Just saying.

Glad everybody's okay and it sounds like almost good-humoured about their ghosts and noises. I'm always afraid to open this post in case of what I read. I don't love ghost visitations but I am trying to accept that the weird and wonderful is here to stay. I do hope that they don't stay too long in my house if they visit here.

Arkansas girl - those sound like scenes from a movie. A scary, scary movie the type I no longer watch! Makes me wonder how many others have such encounters - or any not so terrifying....thanks everyone for sharing. I hope others will also.

I don't have unexplained noises, but the explained ones can still be a bit scary. One day I heard a huge crash. I looked all around the house and never could find the cause. A day or two later, I went into the main bathroom and noticed the window was broken! It's a double hung wood window, with an exterior screen and the upper window was shattered but mostly still in tact. It looked like it had been hit with a big rock. But it's a thermopane window and only the outer sheet of glass had broken, the inner sheet is fine. The screen has no holes in it. Mystery!

There is no way a rock could have been hurled in this location. So the only explanation I've been able to come up with was a large bird, flying at supersonic speeds (maybe being chased by a hawk?) crashed into the window. But with the screen on the outside, it shouldn't have tried flying through it (there wouldn't have been a reflection to make it look like it was just the outdoors) and it would have had to hit with tremendous force to break the window THROUGH the screen.

After I discovered it, I looked all around outside for a rock or a dead bird and found neither, although a bird carcass probably would have been removed by predators and it had been a couple of days. Birds crash into my windows all the time, unfortunately, but I cannot imagine one being able to break a window through the cushioning the screen would have provided.

Olychick, glass can seem to break and shatter without anything hitting it. Glass is an interesting substance, the colder it is the more fragile it becomes. A teeny tiny flaw or chip can suddenly let go. If the glass is tempered it can explode without warning. I have had the misfortune of parking my car on a warm fall day, and the next morning finding a huge crack running across the whole windshield. My building has large custom mirrors around the elevators and one day one of them had cracks all over. We checked the security cameras to find the culprit instead, we found nothing, the glass just gave way.

hcbm, interesting. I hadn't considered that possibility, but I think since I heard the loud bang and there is a hole in the center of the pane like from impact, that it was something that hit it. I haven't had the glass company out to fix it yet; waiting for warmer weather, but they'll probably have some theory about whether it was impact or just stressed/shattered.

If there is a hole it was probably impact related. Mother nature is amazing and it might have been a bird. Could a car have kicked up a tiny stone that hit the window?

I'm dragging up my old post because IT HAPPENED AGAIN!! This is NOT an APRIL Fools post.

I work up this morning about 12:53 AM.House was quiet and pitch black. I started to think if I needed to visit the bathroom when B A N G-roll roll roll. Horribly, incredibly loud It felt like my heart stopped and then was racing. The noise was exactly like you would expect if a large stainless steel tray was dropped from the ceiling in my kitchen. and spun about. My bedroom's 3 foot pocket door was wide open directly into the dining room and kitchen beyond, one combined room, and it came from the kitchen. I don't know how to convey just how loud this was. One of the louder sounds I've ever heard. I sat frozen in the dark for about 10 minutes, barely breathing and then turned on the tv. About an hour after the crash, I took a very bright LED flashlight from my nightstand and shined it in there, before tentatively getting up with it and turning on the full lights and checking it out. I have a stainless steel counter height rack. The lowest shelf is 6 1/2 inches from the floor. In front on the floor was an oval stainless steel pan about 7" long, 5" across, flat bottom, and 1 and 1//4 "sides. I keep it on that lowest shelf. How did it get off the shelf and onto the floor, how did falling 6 inches make THAT much noise, and more importantly cause a SIGNIFICANT DENT in the hardwood floor? With a smaller one a few inches away. I spilled something right there earlier in the week and there were no dents there. I get sick over every dent and know where they all are. I'll be keeping the tv on all night tonight.

Sounds pretty scary! Did the stainless tray get dented? Anything with enough impact to dent a hardwood floor would damage stainless steel to a larger degree, I would think.

I have a spare bedroom. Come on over.

I want to show my daughter this weekend when she comes over, but it didn't appear dented. I'll look carefully tomorrow, I should note that for anyone not reading all the above, I don't have pets anymore. And there has been no evidence of mice.

Well, I think the good news is that whatever has been causing this for 3 years now, is obviously not any entity intending to harm you. Scary, yes. I haven't reread the whole thread to see where you live, but was wondering about earthquakes. Since you said you awakened THEN heard the noise, I wonder what awakened you? Could it have been a tremor strong enough to shake the tray loose from the cart? It seems strange that you were awakened first by something, then heard the loud noise.

eta: I just reread most of the posts. One thing that I've noticed in homes I've stayed in (I don't have one here) is the loud crash of ice falling into the bin of the automatic ice maker. It is very disconcerting if you aren't familiar with that sound and it sounds very loud in the middle of the night and similar to some of the descriptions in posts here.

Sounds very bizarre to me, like even if it did just fall out of the bottom shelf, wouldn't it have just slid out and onto the floor. Why the huge crash? I would be tempted to try to recreate the incident by pushing it off of the shelf to see how loud that would be. It certainly should not of dented the floor with just a 6 inch fall...that's crazy! At least, there is one thing, you know where the sound came from anyway!

Oly, I wake up every night, sometimes twice, to go to the bathroom, so my waking up is perfectly normal. Now that you mention it though, it is quite a coincidence to have something suddenly slide/fall off a shelf right after I wake up....and it seems each and every crash has happened when I'm in bed, whether asleep or not. What are the chances of that? Arkansas girl, good idea - when I get a chance later I'm going to try recreating it and see what kind of noise it makes.

I ran into your thread because I was in bed and heard a loud crash and boom outside. Sounded like a car was trying to break and then it crashed. I went out and was unable to find the crash in the neighborhood.

I too thought this was an answer but did not fit situations or sounds. i heard this 35 years ago in a home we purchased . Early AM hours my wife and i sat up in bed after hearing our what sounded like china closet fall over downstairs - nothing there - but we both heard it. About 10 years ago in another home i had fallen asleep in front of the fireplace. i was startled awake by what sounded like pots and pans falling down stairway on other side of the home. thinking one of my older children or wife fell i rushed to the scene - only weirdly to find nothing yet my two daughters said they heard it as well and previously other times. my older son who was working on a computer adjacent heard nothing!

Have heard this crashing in the kitchen thing like described from first post . Can be loud line a dish draier with bowls and maybe some unensils knocked onto the floor . Usually heard when in near sleep mode or coming in or out of rezt. The girlfriend had a brother who had died when the family had lived there in the past , sometimes a shadow would pass over , like when getting clithes out if the dryer or something. That were her thoughts . The girlfriend had also been using tarot cards and had ouija biard as well , so it may have been something connected to that . With that sound and nothing found is some kind if oresence of a non living nature.

I was reminded on Facebook what was happening 7 years ago. It literally sounded and felt like a cannon going off in my yard.

Ok, these "frost quakes" can stop anytime they want. I can't sleep, and they're scaring the crap out of the cat!

Interesting to see this thread resurface again, and that other's have had similar or other strange experiences. I've had several more recent episodes of unexplained noises, but none have been like some of the loud scary ones from before, and the latest have been during the day when I've been up. I hope people continue to add to this over time.

I had a similar sort of experience recently, except my house is fairly new and my family and I are the only people that lived in the house.

I think it was somewhere around 3 am, I was in the living room watching youtube. I heard some sort of chopsticks-sounding object fall onto the kitchen floor. I didn't think much of it and went to check what it was. I was on my way to the kitchen, when I was nearly there, music starts playing from the room right next to the kitchen. It didn't seem like it was coming from outside. It gave this ominous, backrooms type of vibe. I knew for a fact that there was nobody but me, downstairs. I froze and wasn't able to move at all for a few seconds. Being too scared, I didn't check it out. I turned around, went back into the living room, and continue the video I was watching. After 20-30 mins later, I was curious. I gathered enough courage to go back into the kitchen to check what made the noise and what the music was all about and so I did. I was walking around the kitchen and to my surprise, I didn't find a single thing on the floor that could have made a noise when dropped. I even checked twice to see if I missed anything, but still couldn't find a single thing on the floor. At this point, I was feeling anxious. I walked into the room where the music was playing, but also couldn't find any source from which music could have been played. I don't know if I was hallucinating or not. I didn't want to find out, so I just went to bed.

Our first home we owned had some odd experiences. Once we heard a loud crashing noise (sounded like a large pane of glass had broken) coming from our kitchen. It was so loud! I was close to the kitchen in the bathroom and my husband was right outside the kitchen door on the porch. We both ran into the kitchen to see what had broken and we could find nothing. It was so bizarre. We hadn’t been living in the house very long. Several times we would smell horrible smells that came out of nowhere and would dissipate quickly. The day we moved out I smelled the same smell in our bedroom all of a sudden. A neighbor was over saying goodbye and experienced it also. We never could find the source of the bad smells either. Last, things would go missing and then reappear where we had already looked for them. We have lived in multiple homes since and have never had anything happen again.
