mantle ideas please!

Here is the current situation. We removed old wall paneling and old mantel and hearth. now not sure what to do...put another wall length mantle? I want to keep the stone as it is original. thank you for the help!

I love your stone half wall mantle. Does it stick out? Is it a shelf of sorts or is the wall built right above? Here are some photos that might give you ideas. You could hang art, put up shiplap, create built ins, small windows turned into frames or just keep it simple with sculptures ...

thank you! those photos are great. yes, it does extend beyond the wall to hold a mantle. I like the shiplap idea or maybe shelves? I just don't want to make it too dark with wood.
