Should I get a sectional?

I have a large family and every time even a few friends come over, seating is an issue in our small living room. I would like to maximize seating in this small space without making it feel cluttered or the furniture feeling overwhelming. I was thinking about an L shaped sectional. I think I decided against the chaise because it would get in the path to the kitchen. Would a sectional work well or be too much? I tried the app to put in a sectional I looked at today.

Have you measure the sectional and your space to see exactly how much room you will have left over? Is there a tv in the room? A few pics of the entire area would help.

Is the chaise in the way on the opposite side? If it is, I would remove the chaise part. That may be what you are saying anyways, I'm unsure. I love sectionals and they are great for seating lots of people so if you've found on that fits well in your space, I would go for it.

I'm inclined to say "no" on a sectional for a small living room. Usually, they end up dominating the entire space. I suggest a single cushion sofa, a small lounge chair and two small scale occasional chairs - space permitting. As Angel noted, you'll want to measure very carefully. Visual is below for items recommended in lieu of sectional,

Without dimensions of the space we are just guessing. Draw a sketch of your room and all the dimensions and post here in the comment section. You can just upload a photo of the sketch. Make sure to show the dimensions all the way around the room including the doorways and windows.

What is hurting the room now is the scale of your current furniture and the scale of the sectional you are showing. Scale is very important in every room, but especially in small rooms.

Did you know you can seat more people with properly scaled furniture? And getting the right sized furniture is very important for your room.

For the best help, post the diagram so you can get realistic answers and information to make your decision.

I am working on a sketch with the dimensions. I am still getting used to the app, but here are more pictures of all angles for visuals.

The easiest way is to hand draw it and take a photo and upload that way. You can upload to your ideabook or from your hard drive.

That particular sectional looks big for your space, and even though it’s big, I’m not sure how many people you can comfortably sit, 4-5 maybe.

That sectional will take over this small space. How many people do you want to fit in this space? Kids love floor pillows. At least my siblings always loved them. Might be a good option for when people come over who want to sit on the couch.

In general, the space probably needs to be rearranged. I would put the chair on the other side. Leave a clear path to the kitchen between it and the couch. Put the show tray next to the entry door. Lower the TV and get a slim console/media table to go under it. Or maybe something like this will double as both. Shoes in the bottom. TV in the middle.

    Hooray Denita!

    Hi Alexandria-

I am one of those anti-sectional people. They are bulky, awkward, no one wants to be squashed into the corners, and are not versatile at all. Even if you do find one to fit the room you are planning now, it is a corollary of Murphy's Law that it will never work in the next room you will need to place it in. I don't care much for love seats either.

I would purchase a sofa and chairs and instead of a cofee table a good size ottoman with a tray on top of it, and the ottoman can also serve as seating.

In a huge room you could purchase two sofas and chairs. but this room doesn't appear to be huge.

Depending on the size of the sofa you purchase you might want to rethink the side table nearest the bookshelf. Can you find a different place for your vacuum cleaners? Instead of putting a table lamp there, how about wall lamps if you need task lighting for when you reading on the couch? You can get the plug-in type so you don't have to bother with an electrician.

A sectional limits furniture placement and no one really likes sitting for an extended time without armrests. Unless someone is furnishing a truly huge great room and need it to define the difference between living/dining space, I'd not recommend a sectional.

An ottoman can double as additional seating. So can a sturdy wooden storage chest with a separate cushion that could be used as an end table or plant stand when not used for seating.

You might consider whether or not you could add cushions to your kitchen chairs for additional seating. If the need for additional seating is frequent and your current kitchen chairs are not suitable for temporary additional seating, you might consider changing a couple of them for "captain's" chairs -- usually larger and more comfortable seats with a short armrest that are used at the two ends of a dining table with other similar style chairs.

No. Too big , too bulky and forever inflexible. You don't need an "app" you need a measuring tape, a piece of 1/4 inch graph paper and a good measuring tape. One quarter inch equals ONE foot. Draw the room. Include doors and windows.

I love sitting in the corner :) That's a big reason I like sectionals. Though I am leaning away from a sectional for this application.

Thanks everyone. Denita, I think hand drawing would be the best idea. I am adding the blueprint I sketched using the app. That way the rough estimates are there. I usually have the shoe tray by the front door. As for the vacuums, I am currently cleaning out my hallway closet. So, those normally go in there. I think the floor pillows are a great idea, but I would need to figure out how to store them. Should I keep my current furniture if it is a no on the sectional? I do love sectionals personally. When I go to family's houses, they have sectionals and we all curl up in the corners, lol. Here is the sectional I saw. I took a picture of it in the store.

    Here is the blueprint

You could fit 8 people on that if you really wanted to. More realistically, 5-6. Don't do a chaise. It doesn't fit any more people and it makes it bulkier. You could probably fit 6 people with a new couch and chairs as well and it might fit better.

Emily, do you think it will be too bulky in the room too?
I like the idea of an ottoman for more seating if needed too. I have a feeling it would be tucked away against a wall most times, with the kids running in around the room all the time. If anyone has any ideas on how to lay out the sofa with the chair and the smaller decor chairs mentioned, let me know. I didn't know if that would block the kitchen and disrupt the open flow?

With the additional photos, I can see that a shallow depth sofa will work best. More than likely an apartment sized at about 36". I'd guess what you have now is about 40"-42" deep.

Not sure that two occasional chairs will work. But, as Jan Moyer requested, measure up and create a floor plan and we'll at least know what sizes will work.

What are the dimensions of your current sofa and chair? I suspect they are too large for the space as they look very bulky.

Current sofa is 38" depth, 40" high and 84" long. My husband LOVES Lazy Boy because the sofa and chair reclines fully back.

I think a long ottoman placed under the tv would be very practical as opposed to a tv unit. People could sit on it when taking shoes on/off, extra pillows could be stored in there and it could be moved around the room to where needed, when needed.

Suggestion for closet. Put a couple of rows of hooks on back of door for jackets etc. Lower row for the kids, upper row for adults. Then they are hidden from view.

I have some furniture arrangements based on the dimensions of your room.

    Option 1 includes:

    Sofa: D: 36" W: 80"

    Armchair: D: 34" W: 31"

    2 Occasional Chairs: D: 31" W: 26"

Option 2 includes a sectional, which I know you really want :-)

    Sectional: 8 ft X 7 ft and D: 40"

    2 Occasional Chairs: D: 31" W: 26"

Please note that Option 2 will abut very closely to the front door - like within a couple of inches. So, when you walk in - bam - the sofa arm is right there. You may be able to find a smaller sectional.

Both arrangements will be tight. I'm not sure if someone said it or not, but take some painters tape and mark out the dimensions of your preferred furniture on the floor. That will show you most closely how much floor space they'll eat up.

Lots to consider. I hope this was helpful. Good luck!

I’m with pennydesign on this one. I like sectionals. It’s your home, get what is most comfortable for your family. From looking at Manon’s arrangement, you should try finding one so the short side of the sectional backs up to the kitchen and the long side against the wall. Definitely use the painters tape to measure it out. I really like Angel’s idea of a storage bench under the tv. I used to have one in my living room and was always amazed at how much it was used. Good luck!

Here’s an example of a storage bench. $156 on Wayfair

I found this storage bench at Target. I was thinking the dark blue because it has less chance of showing stains with my toddler and baby running around. With the sectional should I get a light or dark beige? Macy's has a great stain, rip, tear protection plan for 5 years. So, I think I can be more flexible on the shade of color.

If you do decide to go with the sectional then don't run the size right up to the doorway as shown in the mock up by Manon. If you go that large your room will look too crowded.

You already will be cutting off the bottom portion of the window (and the light) if you go with a sectional but going all the way to the doorway will make the room look overstuffed and uncomfortable. That is the problem with the sectional you are showing in your pic now, it is way too large for the space.

Option 1 of Manon's plan is much more flexible and actually seats about 6 adults easily and comfortably. The chair won't block the light if it is the right chair. The storage ottoman under the TV is a good idea. Add a couple of floor pillows for the toddlers and you have seating for 8 :)

Remember to also keep space for side tables and lighting. The room needs to breath with the furniture in it.

Don't know if there is a sectional that is the right size for this suggestion, but why not have the one part of the sectional run across the kitchen, with the other side under the picture, then hubby could still have his recliner in the corner. Would have to find the right size sectional to possibly work.

This is a sectional with the shorter side that would back onto kitchen.

The seats on the right are smaller than on the left.

So, I think I thought of an option.

This is a 4 seat sofa. It is 104" long. This could go along the back under the painting. Then, I could get an accent chair with a pop of color like this one. With the storage ottoman for more seating and storage.
Again, I am not very good with the app. But, I think the color combination works.
And this is an apartment sofa. So, shorter than the one I currently have. Which is completely new to me. I didn't realize there was such a thing as an "apartment" sofa.
When I say shorter, I mean shorter in height.

I think the type of sofa depends on what room it goes in...in my living room I have a long sofa like you show, with a low-ish back. It isn't meant for lounging and slumping and invitations to be a slob. It's meant to be sat in and have conversations (a very little used room) and we don't lean on anyone there. My sectional has a "corner" (not really a corner because it has the angled seat like you show rather than a corner seat and a higher back. And that's where I curl up with a book. We also have an ottoman that, when pushed against the sofa, creates as much of a bed as you can get with a sofa. We and the dog all curl up and cuddle and eat pizza and watch movies and read books (well...not the dog really) and are basically sloppy on it (microfiber is indestructible and all of the covers go in the washer and dryer when it needs to)...

So ask yourself what it's use will be and then decide...

my in laws have basically the same floorplan with the same location of entry, hall to house, and kitchen/dining. I like their setup. We have 3 families together with some people in the kitchen and a bunch in the living room. We have 13 total when we are all together.

With the posters floor plan, I don't think 2 sofas would fit unfortunately, 2 love seats perhaps.

i know most people would tell you it looks too cluttered, but to maximize seating, a sectional is the way to go! i would agree with the statement that a chaise doesn't maximize seating, and would therefore suggest a bumper chaise instead. where you still have a back pillow on the return for additional seating. also keep in minde, the smaller your sofa arm, the larger your seating area will be.
