Are you using an architect? This is a big investment, you wan to get it right, I would hire an expert not only to help design the house but also place it in the best possible location on the site. There's much to consider: natural light, drainage, wind, slope if any. As far as a Hamptons style vibe: there are ways to fuse modern and traditional in interiors so they will work. Again, this is where you hire an architect to help you achieve your dream home.

I would say this would lend itself very much to a “Hamptons” style interior but truly you need an architect.

Save yourself future heartache and money, get an architect preferably with a design & build firm. A "building designer" is a fancy name for a draftsman.

Wow. What a thing to say. Can I just point out that not everyone has a budget for an architect and building designers I have met are certainly not draftsmen.

Sophie made a great point. I grew up in PA in a 3000 sf classic Mid Century Modern home with a flat roof. I have great childhood memories of my siblings and I shoveling snow off the roof in the winter and laying on the stones cleaning the clerestory windows in the summer.

Where are you building? What is the topography of the land? Hiring an architect can be expensive, but getting a few consultations with local architectural firms will give you great information without breaking the budget.

Hiring an architect is not as expensive as fixing the mistakes of a draftsman.

We live in Queensland. No snow here lol. We are on acreage with lovely views.

They have architects in AU. Home design is not like a bad haircut. It won’t grow out.

An architect is what you need there are mant things to be considered when designing a house that can really only be addressed by an architect.

So your initial question really does not focus on the advisability of the modern architecture, but the mixing of the architecture with less modern interior. (Hampton Style with cornices.)

To be fair, I am a minimalist and love MCM and Scandinavian Modern interiors, so it is difficult for me to imagine a modern flat roofed home with cornices and less clean furnishings, but since I was a kid I have not lived in an MCM home, but my sister was surprised when I said that. She thought my home in California was MCM. It was a single story California bungalow, but the pitched roof and cookie cutter design is not what she noticed. She remembered the interior décor and thought Mid Century Modern and projected that to her memory of the home in general.

When I was house hunting I looked at a lot of MCM homes and because they were built in the 50s they had issues with electrical and plumbing and other things that took them out of my budget. One, in particular, makes me think that it could have the Hampton interior and not feel odd. I think the stone exterior makes it feel less utilitarian. The interior was very MCM, but it could have handled something more. It does not have a perfectly flat roof, but a very low pitch.

Thanks Jennifer Hogan yes that’s exactly what I’m asking. Modern home interiors are a bit like some handsome men. I can appreciate they are handsome but they just don’t do it for me lol . I’m more of a modern traditional person but not strictly hamptons. I’m originally from the UK and I enjoy more relaxed traditional interiors with a European feel. It will essentially be a country home with animals . However I also love the look of the more MCM exteriors and I think the block with the lovely views would look great with that kind of house. I also love the big windows and light airy feel. It’s trying to get a happy medium between the two and whether that can be done successfully.

I like the idea of stone, wood and render. I don’t really want to create a twee Hamptons home.

In the Uk people often mix the old and new together successfully but it is normally putting a more modern spin on an old building while preserving the character of the building which is rather different.

I love your inspiration house but nothing about it makes me think I would see traditional, English, or Hampton styled furnishings and decor inside. I didn't read all the responses because I couldn't get past the "hire an architect" responses (so typical of Houzz) so I don't know what the general consensus is but I can't imagine it.

Maybe we could give more helpful advice if we understood the following:

1. What specifically you mean by a "Hamptons" vibe, especially what you would consider twee

2. What appeals to you about a flat-roofed house

Absolutely, some of the best houses are not formulaic or predictable, but combine great ideas from different eras and regions, along with sensitivity to the site, to form a unique creation. So I'm sure that abstractly, Hampton and flat roofs, or whatever subset of those ideas you really crave, can go together. I do think your ideas need a lot more development. I would suggest creating 2 ideabooks: 1 on flat-roofed houses. Annotate every photo you save with what specifically you like about the house. The 2nd ideabook will be, of course, Hampton houses. Again, choose favorite photos and then try to tease out what particularly moves you. You may also want to add photos of looks you'd rather avoid (with annotations of course). Please try for 20 photos in each, and I'll do my best to help you.

I think I have realised that I like a more transitional style.

Check out the books with floor plans that are for sale in the big box stores -- grocery and building supply stores as well as many of the chain grocery stores. After you find a floor plan you like -- or mostly like, then talk with a pro -- someone that will fully understand weight bearing walls and what is needed to install plumbing and wiring -- to discuss what changes are practical or can and/or cannot be done as well as what roof lines and other exterior options you have.

It's been a long time since the last time I logged in. Lots of upgrades inside and outside since then, but today I have an urgent question: Last week my black, 24'' wide, Sharp microwave died without warning. The closest I could find to fit the same space in the cabinet was a 21.7 black GE. Would painting the cream interior walls of the cabinet call attention AWAY from the gap in spaae between the microwave and wall. Microwave will be delivered tomorrow.
