The brick shape is definitely odd, but I think it goes alright with the design of the room, the color changes everything though, it brings all attention to the fireplace. Do you think a darker brick color would help blend it with the room and bring out the great contrast in the room? It actually might look really nice if you get it the same color as the tiled black flooring.

Were you planning on mounting or placing a TV in the top area above the fireplace? The surrounding areas above the fireplace look like a great place to install an entertainment system or even some floral accessories

It's very unique ! If its just the brick that you have gone off ( and not the shape) then maybe you could chose a stone finish to clad it with - or even have it plastered ?! Love the sunken area ! Bet it gets quite cosy there with a roaring fire !

HI -- Brick is never dated ,-it's what you do around it that makes it look dated . Your space is nice and modern so I think you have to get rid of what you don't like . This fireplace design is very choppy looking and odd as you say . I think you could have something more to your taste and a proper style for the room. The fireplace as it stands prevents anything else being done to it to make it look better so it should go . You might possibly be able to remove the odd square box that is on the side and then box in the top part of what's left. I actually don't mind the kind and color of the brick ,- it's modern looking. Maybe get an expert ( brick or tile or fireplace person ?) in to have a look and see what they recommend . Just,- still keep it modern , not country , because your room is modern.
