Transplanting in containers

I recently made a mistake when buying some Hellebore and bought two different varieties. Long story short, I'm keeping themy and moving the extra to an area that currently has heuchera. I don' know where I want the heuchera but I know I want the hellebore in its spot. Can I dig up the heuchera and out it in a small pot and leave outside until I decide, and gets warmer. If so, do I use potting soil or gardening soil to hold it ?
