I like the one where you bring the island right up to the posts.

Option 2 is better. In option 1 it seems like people would push back and hit those posts. Plus incorporating the posts into the island design make sit seem more seamless.

Thanks hatetoshop! I agree. It's hard to lose the more conversational aspect of the corner seating. Love to hear others chime in too. Also I'd love to hear someone explain why they like the island resting against the post and how it could still be conversational. :-) is it right that you're supposed to have two feet for a bar stool to get in and out?

Benjesbride thank you I remember this layout! Only thing is I worry about the chairs being in the way being not push in and such. Do you see that as a problem?

I think if you have 60/66" or greater aisle it should be fine. You could measure how far back you and your people are comfortable sitting at and how far back you typically scoot your chairs to make sure.

#1 since it is going to be the everyday family eating area. Just the smaller size. Personally I don't like islands that look like a 50s luncheon counter. Did you ever go to a bar with a group of 4 friends and try all to hold a conversation. It isn't easy. Someone is always blocking the other person.
