I got my first sprouts emerging yesterday!

late summer/early fall 2016 I collected seeds from the front..scratched the dirt and "planted" in back..this is what I had the next summer 2017..there were more than what you see in this pic..planted more seeds in 2017..can't wait for summer 2018..

I've got some seedlings growing right now. Some from seeds I collected in the yard and others from seeds I purchased. It's my first year trying to grow from seed but I've got just over 100 plants sprouted so far.

I'm also growing Heuchera and Oakleaf Hydrangea from seed, both of which start out teeny tiny. They also both set tons of seed.

I'm with Caroline, I've avoided HSTs. So, I'm working on this one. I'm having a hard time getting the spots where the two HSTs and the seams come together to work well. I have the seams lined up, but the sewing machine has a hard time getting over the hump and one thing or the other gets moved. So, the points are off as is the seam in some places.

I've read about beating seams with a rubber hammer, but I'm not sure that is applicable here. Are there some tricks or suggestions anyone can share?

The short story is: seeds are fun to grow, but honestly you're better off buying known plants that will perform well in your climate. Hybridizers work very hard to make interesting plants; first-timers' successes will be modest, at best, and it takes at least two years from seed to get a plant the size of one you'd buy from a reputable nursery or on-line catalog.

if i were doing this .. outdoors .. this summer ...

i would probably start the seeds in a tray ... or protected nursery bed .... and grow the plants on and then plant them out in the garden in early fall ...

i would not just throw the seeds around the garden.. and hope for the best ...

Well, my little Hosta seed project is noting well! So for I think I have one variegated (dark green and light green) Hosta. It’s so exciting to see them growing and starting to show what characteristics they will have!

Sunny wood, I love your setup! I just have a little cart with lights, nothing fancy. My little hostas are still tiny, but I can’t wait until they get bigger and I can start to see more of their features, like yours!! How do you typically go about hardening them off to be planted outside? Is it easier because they go in the shade? Here is a picture of my little Hosta babies.

Nicholsworth, I wish I had a sunroom or greenhouse too, but that’s never going to happen. We are going to glass in our balcony, but even then that area is completely shaded. But I’m growing my seeds in this grow cart, and it’s going fine so far! We got ours on Amazon.

No more room for seedlings here in Colorado. I will give away some, throw some away . The final selection will go in my truck to my house in Chazy,NY. There they will sit on my back porch,which is mostly shaded for a week or two. If it rains I cover them. Then they will get planted in my garden in partial shade.

If the light height is adjustable on that setup, then you should have it about 3" above the hosta leaves. It's looking like yours want to stretch a bit, if the light is that far away.

ilove.. your seedlings are etoliating .... growing to tall ... you need to either move the lights down.. or the tray up ...

with any plant.. the lights should be 2 inches from the plants .... to be akin to sunshine ...

Iloveto Cook..your grow cart is a success!..I realize that most of you (maybe all?) are growing hostas from seed without a sunroom or greenhouse..it's a dream of mine..my husband couldn't complain if the plants were in a space "they're supposed to be"..lol

Thanks everyone- I moved the light down today.

My first attempt at this. I had some sporadic germination. Could've been the seeds or uneven heat or not wet enough, so I rewet them today and left the plastic domes on. Think I might be ready to fertilize in a week?

Sprinkled some seed into a salad bowl with lid end of February. Just to see what happens...Nothing professional, just the windowsill over the heating. They will have long legs but they grow nevertheless.

Karin..very cute seedlings!..I should've tried that..this geranium was in my garage until a week or so ago..turned cold and I brought it in..all of us should just sell the furniture and convert our houses into greenhouses lol..my first time saving a geranium..
