Problem with Craftsman rotary lawn mower

For over 15 years my mower has been very reliable. However, recently when pulling the starter rope it does not retract back into the starter housing assembly. Is there a spring or some such that needs to be replaced? What else could be going on?

Yes most likely the recoil requires attention the spring may have become weak or need lubrication and cleaning . Inspection will determine what action is necessary !

There are some neat youtubes online showing possible problems and repairs. You will probably spot your model in the link below. Or include your model # in your youtube search to possibly see your model directly. Most are simple enough to see the problem and repair and some can be a BEAR! They are pretty straight forward to diagnose and repair, PROVIDED you've done it before. The recoil spring represents a lot of potential energy which can get loose, do damage, poke holes in things (you!), etc. I'd take it to a shop, should be an inexpensive repair.
