Thanks for that great recommendation. I'll splurge on a pot of yellow. (Bad luck in the past with red ones.) I've never seen yellows. Are they more hardy, do you think?

A 2012 GPNmag.com article says, "In the past, numerous cultivars of Gerbera jamesonii were used; however, these cultivars have many soft characteristics lending them susceptible to plant pathogens and not suitable for long term and carefree use in landscapes.

Recently, breeding efforts by the gerbera breeding company Florist Holland from the Netherlands developed an entire series of gerbera with characteristics that provide strong garden performance. The Garvinea series is cold hardy to USDA Hardiness Zone 7 and provides strong resistance against pests and diseases." And raves on about continuous and profuse blooming.

But, it also says (for commercial growers), "Cool temperatures, particularly at night, are important for developing flower buds." Would that apply to my hot central Florida garden?

Irma, as I remember, this one blooms straight through the summer here in Tampa. It is in a 25 gallon container. We have a couple seedlings from this one, but they are not comparably vigorous - the Garvineas are hybrids. They are not cheap - we paid almost $10 for the red one yesterday. I think the one in the photo was from Lowe's discount shelves.
