I would think that a wood frame that changed with humidity independent of a wood door that also changed with humidity would cause twice the problem with changes in humidity, like sticking, than a wood door in a metal frame would?

Whoa! I've never seen that kind of frame. How is the door hinged? Are there ever cracks, like with corner bead? With no casing, what about smudging on the wall next to the knob? What are the downsides? The simplicity is wonderful.

I've hung doors for over 40 years and used steel frames with solid core doors mostly in commercial applications, but also many residential such as modern and contemporary custom homes. Plenty of mid-century homes had the no casing look that pal shows, in fact the house I grew up in was one.

Cookn, thank you, but I guess I'm having a senior moment. I can't find a frame on the Timely website like the one in palimpsest's pictures.

I used a Mag77 for years, but finally went back to my one true love. Dang thing sure is a lot heavier than I remember.
