Need help designing/decorating my dining room.

Would love to hear any ideas on how to design/decorate my dining room. It looks really boring, and I just don’t know where start on making look inviting. Should I hang floating shelves? Frames? Where should I put them? What curtain color should I buy? How about the table?

I don’t want to get rid of the table, and black furniture (from MIL) but will be getting new chandelier.

Thank you very much.

Can we see a picture of the window wall to make suggestions for curtains? As well as the blank wall where you would hang art? What colors do you have for accents in the rest of the house? I would hang something like 4 each of simple botanical prints on either side of the cabinet and a larger piece of art on the larger empty wall. What would your budget be for artwork and drapes?

Definitely a new chandelier. I'm gonna remove this one to get you started.

I wouldn't do pastoral scenes in gilded frames. It's too expected. Look at some of the modern masters instead: Matisse, Mirò, Klee.

    Back in a bit.

I got rid of the art on the left wall, too, because it's too high and too small. I left your electrical in place so if anyone wants to Photoshop a new chandelier, they don't need to rewire.

I like your chandelier. It “goes” with your furniture (which is very nice). I think you need some pictures, a rug, and maybe some curtains.

Here are a few that I think would coordinate well with your Asian cabinet and give an updated look.

You could go full on Asian with a modern twist.

@groveraxle wow, amazing transformation! I really like it. Thank you very much for taking your time doing all the pictures. I think I might go full Asian then.
@katinparadise here is a picture of the window. Sorry, I know it looks awful now. Things that are not supposed to be in the dining room. We are still moving things around and planning on what to get and how to decorate each room.

grover's 3rd is nice ...[ 1 and 2 seem to repeat lines/shapes of backs, and not needed] ...solid with shine, almost divine.

Is back of your cabinet a gold sheen of some kind?

I almost get the feeling the table should be turned can you post a picture of the rest of the room?

Maybe your curtains are fine - do you like the fabric with other gold there?

I am not sure what your style is, but your table and chairs made me think of these styles:

This is a colonial look - I love the blue. I also like the painting - nice one in a frame and the blue dishes:

SW Sea Salt on the walls and "picture frame" wainscot:

My husband's aunt was an artist and she gave us two beautiful paintings in lovely frames. The one in the dining room is a sunset over a river. I love it. Don't just run out and buy anything, wait till you see something that makes you smile.

Victoria, what a beautiful china cabinet such a nice size space to work with.

That Chinese china cabinet is going to be somewhat limiting. I don't think you can go colonial or country with it.

Hi you can put some of those panels on your wall .
I would consider changing the chairs. Keep the table. Go for a classic shape on the light fixture .

Groveraxle, I am blown away by your photoshop skills.

You need a table runner and some plants and maybe add a family photo collage, it doesn't have to be big on one of the walls and a rug oriental themed fabric would pair wonderfully I think and don't set those extra chairs so close to the cabinet space them out more near the corners I do hope you could change out that light fixture to one suggested as that would really tramsform the room most.

@Decor and Sign hi, thanks for the idea but where I can get those ?

Thanks everyone for all your ideas. Have a great day.

A few rugs to try on:

I have a chandelier like yours. It was easily transformed by removing the glass and substituting the little lamp shades - they are available in various colors - IF you don't want want to buy a new chandelier right now. And maybe it can be lowered? I really like the 2 matching pieces of 'tulip' art grover posted - they kind of have Asian look, but traditional at the same time. Anything botanical of your choosing should work. Overall, I really like your table, chairs & credenza and you have a nice room.

You have a gorgeous space there. Do you need any more storage in the dining room? I would possibly match the china cabinet with a serving buffet on the door wall or window wall.

Any kind of art will look good, but the scale that the folks have been posting is what is important. Big pieces or a collection of smaller ones. I have both in my DR. The art you have seems too small, it needs friends.

I would consider painting frames of the chairs, but leave some wood on the seat. Maybe paint the table legs too. Color depends on the vibe you want in there. You could definitely go "British Colonial" if you like that look.

I'd rehab the chandelier instead of getting a new one, and spend my money on a buffet. You could even spray paint the chandelier black but I like the gold/brass. I just don't like the glass globes.

If it were me, I would definitely take advantage of the wainscoting and do two tones in there, but I love color . . . YMMV.

Hi everyone! Thank you very much for taking the time giving all your ideas. I’m overwhelmed.

We do plan on buying a buffet furniture to be placed by the right corner wall next to the door; and thinking of buying a wall mirror too, either small pieces put next to each other or a big rectangle one.

The table is a solid oak and was expensive, so will probably just put a runner on it (suggested by other commenter) and not paint them.

The the idea of a rug. Wound a cream/gold with a touch of black or dark brown rug would look nice?

Love the ideas of putting art on both sides of the China cabinet, however, can someone suggest on what to hang on the right open corner wall?

    Thank you very much

That rug design sounds pretty in dark brown, the black might be too gothic and I would put a large plant there, it should thrive with plenty of sunlight in a nice vase.

    Oriental style planter vase

If you put a buffet table on the other wall maybe hang a round mirror above it then two straight edge matching hangings on either side, I'm thinking with some metallics elements added. Put your stemware on top.

What to hang on the walls depends on what direction you go with the space. I rarely recommend a single piece alone; I always choose furniture, lighting, rugs, art, accessories and present them as a unit because each piece depends on the others.

Since you don't have a dining room ideabook, we really are just taking shots in the dark. It would help if we could see your favorite rooms so we could make suggestions along those lines.

And, as I said before, you have a very bossy piece of furniture with that china cabinet; it needs to be allowed to rule the room for a cohesive look.

Rather than another large piece of furniture I would consider a bar cart with glass shelving for a lighter more open look. I would not put a mirror on that wall. It won’t serve any purpose. Your window is not centered. I would get a longer rod and do more panels and disguise the off center by putting additional panels on left and tricking the eye to make the window look centered. With your beautiful Asian China cabinet, I would embrace with colored bamboo shaped fixture. Arrange a grouping of Asian pots on the table, perhaps from your collection in the China cabinet. A nice rug large enough for chairs to slide back and not go off rug. Bbl with light fixture.

Google "British Colonial style dining rooms" or search Houzz for that look, you might find some good inspiration photos.

When we moved in, I don’t understand why the windows in this house are not centered. Our living room has windows and are off centered too. I find it difficult to decorate each room. I attached a photo of our living room for reference. Now that my daughter is 3 years old, we our ready to decorate the whole downstairs, and get furnitures. The wall art in between the windows always looked off to me. I tired hanging small frames on that wall and still look not right and I just ended up leaving that one piece of art there hanging. Thanks everyone for all the suggestions and ideas. Sorry for the mess. We arranged her toys every night but it would only take less than 5 mins in the morning for her to move or mess things around.

I'm not sure if you are asking for help with this room but I'll add my two cents :)

You have a nice space and nice things, you just need to tweak things a bit. Your pic looks lost on the wall. A darker, more substantial frame will help it relate to the rest of the room. Untie your curtains and spread them out, right now they look undersized. move your furniture away from the walls and on to the rug, it will make your space look more cozy. Your brass side tables are pretty but they shouldn't be hiding behind the chairs.

Yes, three year olds can upend in room in no time flat. ;-)

A few suggestions for the living room. Move the toy shelf to the right side of the room. We can't see what's over there now--some kind of big dark cabinets?--but if there is space enough, perhaps that end of the lopsided wall can become toy storage. The way it is now, the toy shelf is the focal point of the wall, so get it out of there.

Try one of those brass and glass tables between the windows and move the chairs on either side close enough to use it.

Unleash the curtains so they don't look so skimpy. You could probably use some extra panels on those windows to make them look more substantial, but for now just untie the drapes.

If you give us more views of the room, we can make better suggestions.

Here’s the entire look of the room. I’ll, move the curtain rod up and get a different art that’s more visible. Thanks very much :).

Victoria, if you want help with the living room, please give us separate photos of each wall. Those panoramic shots don't help a lot.

It looks like you have all the seating shoved against walls and into the corners which is not conducive to conversation and forces your traffic pattern through the middle of the room.

Why is there no TV in the obvious spot in the wall unit? Do you have one somewhere else? How do you use this room? Is it mainly a playroom for the kiddos? If you don't intend to put a TV here, you need something other than that dinky mirror in the center. It looks sad and lonely. And if it's to be a playroom, then perhaps the wall unit should be turned over to toy storage. Right now, the room is neither fish nor fowl.

@groveraxl Thank you for pointing that out. I do need help with the living room as well. We have a television but it’s in our family room right now. We are thinking of getting one in the future but will focus on getting new couches now and remove all the sitting furniture in the living room. Some toys will be put away and move to my daughter’s room. Made some changes a little bit and took down my curtains. Again, the only thing that we probably keeping in this room are the brass side tables or might keep the black chairs with gray pillows. I don’t like the floor lamp so I might move them in our bedrooms. I don’t know really. Thanks a lot groveraxle.
Took down the curtains because I’ll be moving the rod up a bit and will get new new ones. What color should I get? Taupe? Light brown? How about the couches? Should I get something light in color or darker? I’m thinking making a gallery wall (attached photo) on this corner. Since we’re not getting a tv yet what would you guys suggest me putting on that space? Thanks
  • 7 years ago

Your rearrangement of the seating is a huge improvement. For balance, you really need a longer couch instead of that dinky loveseat. Depending on budget, I'd keep the two black chairs (if they're Ikea's Poang chairs, I know they're comfortable) because they're neutral and allow great flexibility.

When you do a gallery wall, don't use those frames with multiple openings for snapshots or anything like that cluster you have now. Choose your very best candid shots; remember, this is your artwork so it should be compelling. You can create a cohesive gallery wall by framing all the photos the same, or by converting them all to black and white or sepia tone. It's pretty inexpensive now to have them printed on canvas and stretched. One of my favorite uses of family photos is this:

There are some articles on Houzz about creating gallery walls. The trick is to keep your grouping tight, to vary the sizes and orientations of frames, and to arrange them in a way that creates balance and movement.

Houzz doesn't seem to be working right now. I'm going to quit my browser and return.

The gallery wall will be nice, are you able to get some baskets and utilize those for the toys on the lower portion of your bookshelves so you don't have to keep the toy bin there and now you can decide on an accent wall color to bring it all together depending on your curtains and add some plants by the windows that get great lighting. Looks nicer already!

That's a great arrangement for the gallery wall groveraxle! I would follow that exact same setup right there.

A more streamlined look with major toy storage:

Hi, thanks everyone for all your suggestions and ideas, and especially to @groveraxle for all the efforts doing the photoshopped pictures. I’m looking around already for frames, couches, curtains, a rug etc. It might take a few weeks for me to get back with new pictures. I’m excited already. And I’ll be back for more ideas from you guys as I go along with my changes. Cheers!

I would probably replace the mirror with art, but for now i just lowered it a bit so it related better to the sofa. I'd do plain curtains in a color close to the wall. A full size sofa, maybe in a color lighter than this cordovan, definitely lighter than the one you have now.

Please send those torchiere lamps to live with a starving student in the dorm somewhere.

    The dog is optional.

Victoria, I know things have moved on to the other room but I just read back and someone mentioned shades on your existing light fixture. It’s not such a bad idea considering you have other things to get; it’s traditional and is a nice size. I would suggest moving the two chairs next to the China cabinet. If you are keeping the chairs you have I would have them sprayed black. They are too informal as they are now.
