Q about 1st seed pod

My Hoya Australis ssp. tenuipes has developed a seed pod ... Very excited!!

Does anyone know about how long it takes to ripen on the vine? I don't want to lose the seeds and want to place a mesh bag over it, but not too soon. About how long does it grow? It's growing rather quickly, from 1" last week to its current length of 3.5"

Bump ... Seed pod is now 5" long and looks like a string bean.

@mairzy_dotes ... Please share your experience.

Thank you, laticauda. Sorry to hear you haven't gotten blooms. I'm not an expert on these but have been growing C&S for well over 30 years. Here's what i recommend: Put it outside in bright morning only and/or filtered afternoon sun as soon as overnight temps are 65ºF and over. Feed monthly and give it a bloom booster twice a year. Works for me.

Sending positive vibes your way. Please message me when yours blooms ... I want to see it!!

Lol, it's totally my fault. I'm lucky they aren't dead with all the neglect they received. A northern exposure isn't really enough light but as long as you don't over water them there, they won't get leggy or die! I have them on the south side of the house now, a little to the side of the window and they seem to be doing a lot better! The south side is where all the highly desired lighting comes in and since they Hoyas will live perfectly happy in the north window (save for flowering, mind you) that's where they lived.

There is so little information online. I found this:

    http://www.natureloveyou.sg/Plant%20Story/Plant%20Story%20-%20Hoya.html

Looks like the pods take around 2 months of gestation on the vine before bursting open. Still hoping someone with australis seed pod experience will chime in.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much interest in Hoya seed pods.

What kind of fertilizer do you use? How often do you fertilize? I think the reason the posted pachyclada seeds didn't do well is due to a nutritional deficiency and if the mother plant were getting everything she needed, the seeds would have been more vigorous.

I had asked about hoya seeds several years ago and got crickets.

If it weren't for you ... cricket city! LOL

Because I use high drainage substrate and the salts do not accumulate, I just use tomato food NPK 6-18-6 on the C&S I fertilize monthly. You can put 2 Jobe's spikes in a gallon of rain water and just use as needed. I've been using it for years and they love it ... See?

Very beautiful! I just bought a new spray bottle with hoze/nozzle to fertigate my plants. I currently have a spray bottle mister but the nozzle and bottle are firmly attached to each other and makes it hard to water small plants in trays in situ. I just have to pick it up at Lowe's. Hopefully it'll make fertilization less of an ordeal.

That was awesome! Thank you very much, Carolyn.

So, looks like it took 12 weeks after he noticed the pod for it to rupture. That's exactly what I wanted to know, I noticed mine 2 weeks ago when it was 3" long. It seemed to pop up out of nowhere overnight before I noticed it ,,, and I keep a close eye on my plants. This one is on my front porch, so I will be checking it daily. I'll let it grow another 8 weeks before bagging it.

    Will keep everyone posted.
