Falling brick veneer

The brick veneer is falling away at the back corner of the house. The local home foundation experts said that the slab is still intact. Also the gap is big enough to get a pretty good view of the slab behind to be able to see that there are no cracks in the area. Obviously just slapping some mortar on and pushing the brick back in place is not a solution. My first instinct is to dig out around that corner and check the footing that the brick veneer is sitting on. Where do I start on identifying cause?
