Need Help with Dining Room!

last modified: 8 years ago

I just moved into a small(er) home and the only place I could fit my desk for work was in the dining room. Dining room is 107"x107" (272cm x 272cm)

I was originally going to eat at my coffee table or work desk but I think I really need to eat at a proper dining table. I thought about adding one on the other side against the wall to fit two people. I calculated that a 48"x30" (122cm x 76cm) would probably be ideal.

Is there any way to go about this differently than I laid out? I taped the ground to show what would be a dining table (PS. the small table in the background will not be there.)

Does this look too busy with the tri-level furniture piece including the dining table? If so how can I make this work so it doesn't look "crowded"? My girlfriend really wants to keep the tri-level but I am not sure if it will be too busy looking with a dining table.

Will your desk fit under the window where you have the tri-level? If so, it would leave more space for a round dining table.

What’s on n the wall where you’re taking the picture

I see you work with a laptop. If you're naturally tidy, you could work at a dining table placed in center of room. Use a tray or tabouret for supplies that you can easily move off table when dining. You could even place a larger piece of glass or other material on top of your desk for a ready made dining table.

Claire - There is no wall it just goes into the living room area. The front door is on the wall where I was thinking of putting a table to the left of me where I was standing taking the foto.

Cor - I hadn't considered that, that seems like a good idea. Would you put the bistro table against the wall?

No - I'd put it in the center of the room like a dining room table or favorite to one end of the room.

The foto is a bit deceiving but putting it in the centre of the room puts it in the pathway of the kitchen I think. Would you keep the table where it is? I guess my idea was getting keeping the table as is and put a 30" bistro table where the tape is

THat could work it you purchased a square or rectangular bistro set - I don't think I would do round up against a wall.

There’s no other room besides this one to make as a dining room or add an area around your kitchen/living room

Claire - I took more fotos for context.

I like mjlb's idea of putting a dining table in the middle of the room and using it as a work desk. Your work space looks pretty clutter-free, so it wouldn't be too difficult to move the laptop, etc., when you want to use the table for dining. Maybe move your stuff when necessary to the lower cabinet of the corner built-in, which I love.

We originally were going to put a proper dining table in the middle of the room but I really didn't want to keep moving my work stuff on and off to eat, if that makes sense. Also I didn't want to get rid of my table which is probably too small if we were going to actually do a centered dining room (my table is 24"x48" \ 61cm x 122cm) anyways. I am not sure if the right solution is possible (keeping the desk where it is) but I figured I would try to ask others!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! So far I am liking the bistro table that perhaps wouldn't go against the wall but off centred\near the window at 30" diameter. We are also trying to not go to a stool height table, although that might be the most practical option. Keep 'em coming!!

Ok I’m not trying to be nosy but even if mjlbs is correct I mean don’t get me wrong I like the idea too but do you want to get rid of your desk? Maybe you can place somewhere in your living area if you can show more of it

How big of a work desk do you need? The built-in prompts an idea: What about a triangle shaped desk placed in the corner on the other side of the window from the built-in? That would give you a little more space for a separate dining room table.

Look up Candice Olson Ostrich Feather Chandelier to see a unique solution...I cannot figure out how to post the pic from Pinterest; also Houzz shows the pic....

Candice put two low storage cabinets with sconces above each one, on either side of a built in banquette that was under a window.....the storage cabinets held pull out trays for office stuff and printer etc. The dining table was glass, and had four chairs two on the opposide side of the banquette and one on each end. Wall paper on the walls in a black airy print on white background.....grey banquette and upholstered chairs and a fabulous ostrick feather chandelier.....you have to look it up on the site or pinterest.......good luck.

If you moved your desk to in front of the window and stacked the wooden shelf on top of the desk you might be able to fit in a round table. Of course you would need to measure, but it might work well.

Susan Davis, I looked for the ostrich feather chandy and came up with this, but it doesn't seem to match what you described...

Hello have you decided on anything

Is there a possibility of putting your desk behind the sofa so the dining room can function as designed?

Hi - yes I did. Here is what we decided with. We moved the desk to the other side and bought a marble bistro table. Worked out!

You did it exactly how I thought it. It looks better but sorry I didn’t get to mention it. Actually I did a render of it
