HI -- Just because you have a corner fireplace ,- you do not need to angle the sofa and other furniture to that angle . I would rather see the sofa backed to the windows and then have the chairs across side by side . You could still have a console table either behind the sofa in front of the windows or behind the chairs . I hope you are planning to get drapes , I think there needed and also the same for the dining room window. Just not a fan of the angled furniture arrangement. Furniture facing a fireplace looks better when the fireplace is on a wall and not in a corner.

From what I can see, I am not crazy about the arrangement on an angle. Can you take a picture of the whole space? I would not do a sofa table with this arrangement.

You have a gorgeous room! The furniture on an angle doesn't bother me one bit and I think once you changed the direction of your rug & coffee table, as you mentioned, you'd have room for a console.

Trade the chairs and sofa, then put a sofa table that is a bookshelf, you can use the table as a buffet when entertaining as it is in the dining area now. Have you thought about "wrapping" your pillars in wood?

It could work but I wouldn't, allow there to be space. Also, those tables tend to end up collecting junk and papers so it makes the space look more cluttered.

Something long, narrow with a little surprise of color.

Is there a normal traffic pattern behind the couch? Putting a console there would affect it.

I like the angle that you have and like how spacious you have the room set up. Given that, I wouldn't add the console. I'd consider adding a floor lamp at the end of the sofa.

Your couch is a perfect blend of traditional + modern -- do you mind sharing where it can be found? ShelleyUK had a great idea to test-drive your space with boxes, + I like LeslieKreger's suggestion to square things up a bit, with the back of the couch facing the dining area. I super love console tables. Pottery Barn has lots of good ones.

I really like the angled furniture. It makes the room more interesting. But, I would transpose the chairs and the sofa. You could then put a console behind the sofa and it would also open the room up more.

I will set up some boxes in the area and see how it affects the flow, I'm still undecided, but I'm getting there.

I think you could add the sofa table just fine as long as it is narrow. Try taking a narrow piece of wood, lay it on the floor behind the sofa and walk by seeing if it impedes walking or your arms encroach it when walking by. I like the furniture arrangement, it is visually interesting.

I don't think you should put a very large one. Maybe something smaller.

You have a beautiful space. There is no need for a console table. Beauty is in function. What is the function of the console table?

I do have a couple of suggestions, though. The sectional, because of its size and the fact that the chaise is near the entrance, is making the space less welcoming. Also, there are too many legs in the space. (A console table----even more legs!!)

1) Switch out the couch and chairs---chairs go where couch is and vice versa
2) Buy a coffee table without legs---like a large ottoman in gold.

I think a low, round coffee table or ottoman would soften the otherwise very angular look of the living room area. Also, I had the same dilemma about space for a console table. One suggestion I received was to use a scaled down half-moon console, which provides a smaller footprint with the rounded sides and more area for walkthrough traffic. A rounded console would complement a circular coffee table or ottoman.

Love the angled room plan as is...though, I would change the direction of the area rug and add a round coffee table (or ottoman) to soften the angular/linear space. I, personally, would add a bookcase (the length -or nearly- of the sofa) behind the sofa (about 12" depth) with 2 lamps for ambient lighting. This would give you more light and functionality (storage, display, etc.)...and balance the room.....Good luck!

Yes not enough room. Add a big palm in corners instead. Room needs texture. Could use end panels on windows too. Your furn is great don't add any. just accessorize .

I like the angle that you have the furniture, but I would swap the placement of the couch and chairs. You would have room for the console table then. What is at the other side of the fireplace?

I like furniture on the angle. If you're like most folks, the couch will get the most use and where it sits gives you a view of the outdoors as well as the fireplace. I'd possibly move the rug and arrangement closer to the place where the photographer is standing. (Center the rug with the fireplace.) What is behind the photographer?

In the second picture, it looks like the post would act as a buffer. It seems to me the traffic flow would more than likely be towards the kitchen area or the living room. If the foot traffic is rarely straight to the dining room, the sofa table would rarely be a problem. I do agree that a long and narrow table is the way to go. I think this would give you the opportunity to add a zing of color! (I'd rather see the color be an accessory than a colored table.) Plus the flash of color would assure the person would not run into it!!!!

As to too many legs? I had to purposely return to the photo to see what was being referred to by another. I still did not have my eye drawn to legs of furniture! I do feel iffy about the coffee table, but am not sure why. I think because it seems like it's smack dab in the middle of the rug instead of having some kind of relationship to the chairs or couch. Does it get much use? I also feel like it and the rug should be turned the other way.

I like the idea of a table..you can add lamps for alternate lighting if you need.

I don't think it needs a console table at all. I would add a table and great lamp on the other side of the sofa,and a wall sconce light on either side of the 2 columns separating the dining room from the living room. Lighting makes such a difference and will really complete your look . Keep it interesting and unexpected, and not quite so stark.

Your home is lovely. I would add the console table, small black top, and very narrow. The picture I am attaching comes from AMAZON! Black will finish the coordination of the chairs.

Go for it! I love the way your furniture is angled ... I am tired of the squared off look. A narrow sofa table works so well. I have a floor plug which allows me to plug in a lamp on my sofa table which is a nice touch. The Amazon black table might work the best if it is long enough to look like it fits behind the sofa.

With the way the furniture is laid out on an angle, I would not put a console table behind your sofa. I think it would block the walkway and simply look like you were trying too hard. What you have done looks good and good design is knowing when to stop. If you did decide to put a table there, do not do a short stubby one like shown above. Do a simple thin long one that runs about 6" in from each end of your sofa.

The console table behind the soda would narrow the walk space behind the sitting area, making the space too crowded and ecclectic.

I like all of your furniture and your rug, with the exception of the coffee table. Maybe trade out the current coffee table for something round or some organic shape, then a console table would work better. A glass Noguchi table might be too modern for you, but something like it would work better in my opinion.

I think you have plenty of room for any type of console table you choose and that it would look great in the room.

That's a great question! If you need to keep the furniture in its current location due to the television, then we wouldn't recommend a sofa table. If a sofa table is added, it will make the walkway too narrow and throw off your traffic pattern. Hope this helps!

Instead of something being added on the floor how about leaded glass panels being suspended from the divided section, not too low, multiple panels with a design that ties them all together. The transom windows could also have a design tied in. www.isaacdsmith.com

I'm thinking of using something very similar for my entry/hall/kitchen/casual dining area ... it's all an open (not large) area and needs to all be the same color (was all done six yrs ago but they no longer make the color and several areas need touching up and I dont' have enough extra paint!). That one might just work.... and we've always used PPG with success.

julie, sorry, just trying to give people different ideas. As far as this discussion I do not think another piece of furniture is needed, it would make it too cluttered.
