Home Office Makeover!

Hey guys! My mother is in the process of making over her home office. Their style is quite traditional. Neither one of us have that special touch! Ha. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! :)

Hi. Lot's of potential here! The paint color is a little dark, but a pretty, calming color if they like the darker tones.

More photos, please, and let us know what colors are in the other areas of teh house. From but from what I see now, I would recommend

-lighter paint color which will be selected, based upon choice of artwork.

-remove the rug. Either no rug or a much larger one.

-since they like a more traditional feel, I'd replace the desk and chair with something more traditional: wood and not black.

Do the 2 monitors need to stay on that one desk?

You might consider a setup like this, where the monitors sit on a desk under the clock and there is also a front desk that faces the entrance to the room.

I agree with the suggestion of having the desk facing towards the door. It seems more inviting & gone are the days where the office is just decorated for function. A small sitting area for coffee, personal touches of family or travel can warm up a space & put someone in a positive mind set to work or be creative.

Carpet: larger size in a beautiful traditional oriental that includes the shade of green on the wall. Then use the other colors around the room. Does your mother have clients that visit her here?

We’ve rearranged some things in the office space but my mother really enjoys looking out the window when at the desk. We need to purchase a larger rug along with actual chairs (chairs pictured are for the dining room - used just for an imagine.) Could we angle the desk from the corner so you could at least be looking into the foyer or would this be awkward? Thank you for your feedback!

Could we have the desk set up like this?

Hi. I don't think she'll like that last setup, because she is not looking out the window and when you enter the office all you see are the monitors. I also feels very imposing to see those 2 large monitors, when entering the room.

I think we need more information about this

    1) Is there one or are there 2 people working at this desk? I know some people use 2 monitors, but notice 1 keyboard is on the lower surface.

    2) Will she consider buying a new desk/s?

    3) What is the door for? A closet?

    4) Do clients visit her here at this office?

She could consider an L-shaped desk. The one side of the L would face the French doors. The other side could face either the window or the back wall. Monitors could go on any side of the L.

She does not have clients visit her at home. This is just an extra space in her hole used for work on occasion. I’m quite positive that she doesn’t actually use 2 monitors at once so there is really no necessity to keep them both in this room.

She is working on finding a large rug to go under the desk! Unfortunately, she doesn’t want to put the desk in front of the door because it goes to the master bedroom. There is another door to enter through the bedroom but this is the one primarily used.

Also, the desk was just purchase a few months ago. Swapping it out already is not really an option plus she just loves this one! :)

Hi. There is nothing wrong with the desk. It is just that you said she has traditional taste and the desk is not traditional.

I recommend removing one of the monitors and facing the desk as I show above. This would allow her to look out the window. It would also allow a clear path to the bedroom.

Thank you! We have moved the desk back this direction minus the L shape! Ha.

That’s great. I’d hang a piece of art behind the desk. On the wall where you had the chairs, you can leave the chairs of add bookcases.

So I'm not sure if you'll have desk facing the tiled area... seems ok. Or face the window, why not! A chair or two will fill up the 'walk-through' wall, and with art, it'll be good! ?

By chair[s] would a lamp be needed? Art idea:

If she likes looking out the window, have you considered putting the desk against the window?

I'd buy a wider file cabinet and place it on the wall to the left of the entrance door. I am showing black here. However, I am concerned about the direction of the style here. You mentioned that their taste is quite traditional. I see that the chairs brought in from the dining room do look traditional. They are wooden. I see a very traditional curio in the hall.

This desk furniture is very modern.

Would she consider buying a new chair that is not black? She could keep the desk.

Does she have any bookcases that she is not using? The wall where you had the chairs is not really deep enough for any chairs other than dining type chairs. Would anyone ever sit there, anyway?

You might consider bookcases on that wall.

She would like to do a large collage behind the wall where the desk is placed - we do a lot of traveling and thinks it would be great to have some personal pictures we’ve taken!

The wall on the left did seem a bit shallow to have chairs there. :/ Originally, there were supposed to be built in book cases on this wall but they were never installed. However, l’m unsure if we would have enough books to fill a space this large! I guess decorative books could always be an option.

She is open to purchasing a new chair for the desk - any suggestions? Also, we do have a small filing cabinet that is tucked away in the corner! Are you suggesting moving it to the left of the mater bedroom door?

Also, I think the space will be too open if we place the desk against the window. Maybe we could put something behind the desk if this were an option but what?

    Rug options?

Overall, I recommend you start thinking about larger pieces. There are a lot of small pieces in the home which chops up spaces. Every wall does not have to be filled. When you do fill it, think "big".

A chair like this would work with both the desk and the home. It is a little more contemporary. You could also go for something more traditional.

I recommend a piece of art behind the desk. Something large. If you want a travel picture and it is taken with a good camera, then you can have it enlarged or framed.

Collage walls are very tricky and can go bad quickly. They don't look good from far away. Most people will see that wall behind the desk from the hall. I recommend a collage wall across from the desk (wall that abutts the hall). Below that, I would put the filing cabinet. But, I'd buy something more traditional-looking and wider than the one you have. The one you have looks like it fits in an commercial office, not a home.

I would not put the desk facing the window. It is very unsettling to have your back to a door.

This rug is a good choice. You'll have to buy a large rug. It will have to be large enough to slide the chair back. Or, you can leave the chair part off the rug altogether. Plan and measure carefully.

You do not have to have books to fill every shelf. Again, not every space has to be filled. Negative space is good. Does your Mom have some bookshelves she is not using? What about a dining room buffet that she doesn't use any more? That could be used also.

.... the walk through doesn't seem best place for rug. What about covering all but the perimeter though?
