Counter or bar height

I will be doing some updating to lighten up my kitchen including the countertops. I currently have a section that is bar height that is really not useable because it is not wide enough. I would like a more open and useable area. However the 2 columns in the pic are load bearing so they can't come down. A beam to replace them is not in the budget. I'm wondering if I should do just a counter height all the way out and nix the elevated section or would that look funny because of the columns? I'm not sure it would be any more useful at one height.

Thoughts or ideas please?

What about making the two sides counter height and keeping the center section bar height so that it still hides the sink?

It never hides the sink unless all your guest are les than 42” tall. I would lower to make at least the counter wider and it will be great for putting out food for parties Whilr you are at it get a counter depth fridge and when your new counter is installed get them to use steel supports and not those corbels

Counter height. Those bar stools are hell for us short people!!

And Patricia is right. Use steel supports for the overhangs.

Another vote for counter height!

I understand the columns are load bearing and you have to keep them. I am wondering if they could be decreased in size? Not the load bearing parts of course but maybe the drywall & cladding around the posts could be streamlined to give the impression of a more open space.
