In our raised beds, Pineapple is more productive but I would give the nod to Big Rainbow on taste. Our Big Rainbow fruits are much larger than the Pineapples (interesting Barrie). I would say the plant habits are both large and comparable. Indeed Pineapple is earlier. I would consider Big Rainbow late in our garden. We no longer grow either and have migrated to Virginia Sweets in the years we choose to grow a large bi-color. It seems to work out best for us overall.

Barrie, for a tomato that size you could sell it or its seeds online! :) Some people pay more for seeds from extra large fruits.

Shell, I really, really want to try Virginia Sweets. Does it ever get 3+lbs? (I still want to try it either way, but that would be another pro for me. I tend to prefer the flavor of salad to medium tomatoes, but I love growing large fruit.)

old german is another good bicolor tomato. huge fruit, and has more color striping than pineapple, from my experience.

If the whole plant produced yellow fruits even in hot weather I would be very inclined to think it was not true to type.

It was late enough that the weather wasn't terribly hot by the time it ripened. It wasn't very prolific for me (so, I didn't have a lot of fruits to inspect).

stevie, I've been wanting to try Old German one of these days. I noticed I had some seeds; so, I planted them. We'll see how it goes!

Has anyone tried Gold Medal? Is it similar, flavor-wise? I've had seeds for it for a while, but I've been reluctant to grow it over other things, due to mixed reviews. Some people love it, however.

I've grown both Big Rainbow and Pineapple. I prefer Pineapple as it has been more productive and produces larger fruit for me.

But they are both very tasty.
