Go with whatever would be easiest to live with, which sounds like the navy blue, and accent somewhere else with the kelly green velvet.

Navy with kelly green and white is a classic look, so it would definitely work in the general scheme of things. The question is whether you'll both be happy with it.

Will the kelly green work in both the master bedroom or the upstars loft area? Is the navy more versatile if the chair moves around? Does your husband have a preference since it's his chair?

Navy would be my suggestion. It will be a more versatile color over the (hopefully long) second life of the chair. I wouldn't do a contrast trim. Tufted is so comfortable.

A word of caution, odds are, after the redo he will say it's "ruined". He likes it because over the years his body has molded the padding to fit his body. I suggest you just get a slipcover and pray for its eventual demise.

I actually love the Kelly green, but would be worried that at some point he'd insist the chair be in the living room and then not only the style but also the color absolutely wouldn't work.

I love Kelly Green, it's one of my faves.

Navy blue will go with anything imo. Even if it drifts to a room with no navy, it literally goes with every other colour. Just toss a pillow or throw with the main colours on the chair and you're good to go.

That being said, I would so do pink. Blush or bubblegum pink (little darker/drabber than Pepto). Every room needs a pink chair.

this is the chair but ours has a tufted back and the back is rolled. It isn’t a petite chair by any means.

The funny thing is earlier this week i found some gorgous hot pink grass cloth wallpaper with a gold metallic thread ever so slightly running through it. I was seriously considering wallpapering the back of some built ins I’m doing in an office . His joking may have created a monster!

This is clearly your husband's chair so choose a color that will appeal to him. If the chair was originally navy, definitely go with navy blue -- perhaps a stretch dark blue denim? Ask for the most firm foam padding available, especially for the seat -- it will keep its shape longer.

If the original chair had no skirt, don't add one (unless you're changing the legs and/or adding casters and need actually to hide something.) A skirt impedes cleaning under the chair and can more easily pick up dirt from the back of a shoe than a chair without one.

You might consider asking for separate removable arm covers to reduce future wear -- perhaps with a pocket for hubby's tv remote.

If the back is high enough for your husband to rest his head on the chair, also ask for a separate, removable swatch of cloth as a headrest -- protects the chair from any natural oils or hair care products and keeps fabric looking newer longer.

Have you considered a slipcover rather than upholstery? If the chair is great shape other than the fabric, you may be able to cover the tufting and the worn fabric with something that let's you take a little risk. Think aristocratic country homes, where lots of comfortable furnishings are slipcovered.

I have white slip covered sofas. I don’t want slip covered chairs. This chair does have arm covers. I don’t know how much good they do as it seemed all i ever did was pick them up off the floor :). He generally doesn’t care at all. I was actually shocked when we moved that he was so insistent on keeping the chair. He said it’s simply the most comfortable chair he has ever sat in. I even warned him it won’t feel the same once it’s reupholstered.

I’ll add that truthfully i doubt i could replace the quality without spending a small fortune.

No occasional chair going in that office Becky but i agree it would. I found a super dea on this office chair and I’ve been considering it. My only hesitation with doing the chair navy is i ordered a sloped armed navy velvet swivel chair for the main family room. I have a navy linen chair with contrasting white welting as well that I’ll put somewhere. Not sure where yet. As you can see navy is and always has been my go to color. So i keep asking myself how many navy chairs can one have? The pink chair would also look awesome with a navy Greek key lumbar pillow on it LOL ( or Kelly green)

Haha Olychick I used to detest pink too. I had four daughters before I was resigned to them wearing it and it took a few more years to start liking it. And then one perfect bubblegum pink t-shirt changed everything for me. I looked soooo good in that shirt lol. Now I love it!!

Im back. due to a delay in our build I put off the upholstery work and rescheduled for May 9th. It looks like I will be doing the chair in Navy blue. Removing the tufting on the back. Here is my question for the day. The chair has these feet currently and they are black/ebony. I don't really want them black/ebony if the chair is going to be navy velvet. The finish seems to be a stain so I can't strip them to a wood tone. I think my only option might be to paint or replace. I actually thought of doing them in a lucite turned foot but that would add a ton of $$$ to this project. Any suggestion for what to finish these?

I love the Kelly green velvet, so I would say "Go for it!" A harmonizing plaid in Kelly green, navy, and white would be great for a small quilted piece to protect the back of the chair and for throw pillows and pull-down shades. Since it is your husband's favorite chair, I would suggest you incorporate all these ideas and furnishings to make a den for him, perhaps in the loft area you mentioned.

Just paint them with general finishes milk paint. It’s not actually made of milk, but rather acrylic, and it’s great for painting furniture.

What about metallic gold or silver for the feet?

Well gang I had planned all along on doing velvet. Just returned from the fabric store and am now rethinking velvet. I will say it is really hard to find navy velvet that is a good navy. Not purple, not so dark it looks black etc. They did have some lovely navy linen blends. I may end up having to go that way unless I find the right navy. My sofa is a white white.
