countertop selection

What are your thoughts about my kitchen counter top and cabinets. I am using moonshine for the wall cabinets and espresso brown for my island.

I think it can work very well.

It’s very pretty. If you pick a stone with this kind of movement, be prepared to chose a quiet, monochromatic backsplash.

The second one is nice; the first one is absolutely gorgeous. Either way, eam44 is right about pairing with a quiet backsplash.

I agree with salex. The first is really pretty. The second is fine, but doesn’t make the same type of statement.

I like the first one. It looks good with both cabinet colors.

Love the first one, meh on the second. The first could be really, really gorgeous. As others have said, though, make sure you have a quiet backsplash.

What do you mean when you say quiet backsplash
  • 8 years ago

By "quiet", we mean a backsplash with simple patterns and neutral colors. In contrast, a "loud" backsplash would be one with bright colors, grout lines with a lot of contrast, or a complex tile pattern. The granite countertop you showed in the photos, especially the first one, is relatively "loud" (which is not a bad thing - but you don't want to combine another loud element with it - let it be the star of your kitchen).

I am not an expert at picking colors so I hope others will chime in with some specific examples of what would be a quiet backsplash. If it was me, I would start by looking at either square or subway tiles in colors like off-white or pale gray.

The first one is definitely a keeper and will look stunning in your kitchen. Definitely use a plain tile backsplash so this granite can be the star.

first one is a winner!!! yes, "quiet" B/S for sure!!

So for example, you don't want another stone for the backsplash or something with a lot of movement too. Since the granite in the first one is so stunning, it should be the star. A nice white tile in any shape with a grout color that is similar would look stunning with your combination.

Quiet to me means monochromatic, choosing a color from your stone, perhaps in an interesting shape if you want more visual interest, or different sheens. If you want a visually stunning backsplash, you should consider a quieter stone.

Just wanted to provide an update ..... we had to restart our search for a countertop because the slabs we found when we went to finalize our selection had more yellow in them than what we initially saw. Thank you for all your input.

We are now considering going with more of a white quartz countertops instead of granite for a cleaner look.

Even though you're now headed another direction, I thought I'd add examples of loud vs quiet.

These are loud-notice they all have "quiet" countertops:

These are quiet-notice the dramatic countertops (1 star at a time):
