Door gap bathroom

last modified: 8 years ago

Hello all,

after paying to have my bathroom done professionally we’ve realized there are issues with the door frame install that means the pocket door doesn’t reach the floor. By a significant amount (an inch and a half)

. There’s nothing the contractor can do to lower the frame without undoing the entire project and restarting and that isn’t an option at this point. Anyone find any creative solutions for lengthening a pocket door that doesnt result in us having to remove trim? Keeping in mind it has to be able to slide into the wall smoothly. Any miracles solutions would be amazing, considering this is our bathroom and we want privacy and I’m pregnant and super stressed about this.

heres a view outside ignore the color difference we‘re replacing that saddle with a 6 inch one. Also should note the adjustment screws on the roller are as low as they can go

thanks!

There is no miracle solution. But the biggest miracle would be if anyone is going to be down on their hands and knees to see anything at all, and even "noises" are probably not going to be much a factor. I think either re- do it if it will make you crazy, or realize in a couple weeks you will cease to even notice it.

When you're in the bedroom, the door will probably be in the pocket,,..........if you're very concerned with light, or noise in the gap in the middle of the night, get a twenty dollar draft dodger for when you're inside the bath.

Each pocket door comes with instructions like this which are important to follow.

They also include notes that you have to pay attention too in case adjustments needed for a different door height.

    @susanjake

I'd really stop worrying? It's better for the baby : ) After that you will be so busy, doors will be the least of it !!!

It's natural and understandable to want perfection in both remodel and.....babies. The second far more important with ten wiggly toes and fingers lol.

Thanks Jan! And I hear you, just frustrating this is only part of a laundry list of compromises/issues we’ve had on a bathroom that’s become pretty expensive so just disappointed to not be able to be completely elated with the final product.

Sometimes installers don't account for the finished floor so the door ends up being a bit higher and it appears this is what happened here. Frankly speaking, it's too late now to reset the door without taking everything apart... At this point, if you cannot live with it, have them lower the door by taking the door off, remove the rollers, pack the top of the door 3/4", re-attach the rollers and that will bring the door down. They will need to adjust the head molding to hide the seam at the top and that shouldn't be difficult to do.

    Good luck

Really appreciate the feedback! as I am not as familiar with the verbiage you’re using what does pack the top of the door mean?

You nail a 3/4" piece of pine or similar material to the top of the door, same thickness as the door and the same width, paint the same color, it can be done in a way that you will never tell that something was added.

Had to Make a few repairs like that, but not on the pocket door... In one situation, a homeowner had to trim the bottom of the door after the carpet was installed and in another one, a handyman had to do the same and the top was cut instead of the bottom so I had to build-it-up using pine with eased edges to match the rest of the door edge.

In your case, it's a little easier to hide the seam because you have jamb molding covering the door on the side and the top edges so you basically can get away without doing anything to the seam, the paint will hide most of it.
