Low Dining Room Ceiling. Help!

Our dining room is a decent but not the largest 11 x 13. My dilemma is the ceiling height only 8ft and we have archways so the fixture is definitely a focal point and will be seen from all rooms. How do I make this room look as large and open as possible with lower ceilings? Do any of these options work? Do I put semi flushed to ceiling?

    Any of these?

Yes, probably 70% of US homes have 8 ft ceilings, so I'm not sure why you think that's a problem. Nancy gave you excellent advice.

Mount your fixture 30 to 34 inches above your dining table for an 8 foot ceiling. for every foot above 8 you can raise it 3 inches if desired and depending of the overall size of the fixture.

So, you already have a chandelier hanging above the table, but you are wondering if there is a style that will make the room feel larger and more open, and look nice from the other rooms that open into the dining room, too. Do I have it right?

Are you planning to change anything, or is this the furniture and wall decor that you are working with?

    Hi Raelle,

For an 8' ceiling going over a table there are all kinds of options. Considering this is over a table, the lowest I'd drop the light is at 6.5'.

You might think about a piece that is more flat, to not take up too much height.- See our Arnaud chandelier below. It comes in rust or a flat black finish.

Let us know if we can help you at all. Happy decorating!

You have a nice sized dining room. Its not the 8 ft ceiling that makes it appear small. Yes, the light fixture could be updated but it isn't what is causing your room to appear small. The furniture you have up against the wall on the right back area behind the table and to the left are protruding into the room and causing the room to be much smaller than the dimensions would indicate. Do these pieces need to stay? Also the busy art on the back left contributes to the confined feeling. Do you need the extra furniture in the room?

To get spacious: remove one or both pieces of extra furniture, clear off all the small items (including the welcome sign) from the back console top if you don't remove that entire piece to another room, change your drapery so that it is an updated style (hung at the sides of the window and above the window, not criss-crossing), change out the small pieces of art for one large piece. Change the light fixture.

Drapes should be hung like this diagram's drapes on the right. The lower they are hung the smaller the room looks IMO. Also covering up the window contributes to the small feeling.

Here is an example of a similarly sized dining room with arches and window with the drapes that are hung high and wide to let the light inside. The style doesn't look like your style (to me) but the elements of simple large art above one buffet or credenza with a pair of lamps and a stunning light fixture can all be in your style. This is to show you the concept, not the specific pieces :)
