z5 is about half the US and wildly variable.. big city name plz ...

i would definitely use trellis on the corner posts ... and grow some type of flowering vine ...

after that.. im thinking you might be better off with some large perennials ... rather than trees or shrubs

part of your problem is the height of the facade.. versus the lack of growing space.. any shrub that will give you the height.. will.. in a decade or so.. eat up the whole lawn ... as most likely the old arbs did ...

btw.. whats the tree across the sidewalk ...

Objectives for this project?

Oh, I already have something of a plan, thanks to all the advice I got here last summer. I just wanted to share a pic of my house without all the ugly in front of it, and to try to find Jmc101.

Ken, I don't even know what the tree is. We had a big old ash there but it got cut down a couple years ago because of the emerald ash borer. The village planted that sapling, and I have no idea what it is. I hope it survives!

stillpitpat, can you add this information to your previous post, or at least link to it? The thing is people don't know what you said last year or what your garden looked like so we can't follow your progress.

Thanks, NHBabs! And sorry for the vague post. I guess I was hoping/assuming that the people who were helping me last year would be around right now too. I really appreciated yardvark's rendering of my exterior without the greenery and I thought people might like to see how it looks for real. Jmc101 works at a nearby nursery that I will be visiting soon and I wanted to touch base with her/him about that.

I have to say that my house looked so weird when we had everything removed (by the tree service Jmc101 recommended). Standing on the porch and walking up and down the stairs was disorienting. And neighbors would stop and look at the house, trying to figure out what was different. Two of them thought we had repainted. :) It will be so nice to get something in there soon!

This is the house before. And actually this is a very old picture. We repainted in 2007, and this is before repainting. The arbor vitae were even taller when we had them removed. Obv we did not maintain them well, which we will change when we put in new plants.

Thanks both of you. The thing is, stillpitpat, you are the Shrubs Forum at the moment. Yaardvark is always on landscapes. I've not seen him on any other forums. There are tons of forums, tons of contributors and thousands of posts s we need references.

I started out on landscapes, but was directed here to shrubs, which I believe is where I ran across Jmc101. Maybe he/she just isn't here anymore.

I know there are tons of posts, but I have also seen many instances of posters popping back up to "update," and the people who recognize their user name check out the post. At least I have seen that on the kitchens and bathrooms forums. I just thought that maybe the people who helped in the past might want to see the picture. I wouldn't really expect anyone who didn't see it in the past to be interested. And I'd really like to find Jmc101.

Well, I want to go to the nursery where that person works, as I said above, and I don't think anyone else here can help me with that. And I can't contact that person because, as I said above, that feature is not enabled for him/her. Perhaps people on the shrub forum don't reach out to specific others in this way, as I have seen people on other forums do. I have never seen it as offensive, but maybe that is forum-specific.

Or you could just post what you are trying to find out about your project here, see what other people have to say. Instead of assuming only the one party has anything of use to you. You know - keep the ideas coming, your options open etc.

It is not considered offensive to reach out directly to other members, specially if they do not have their messaging feature enabled. And I don't believe anyone here was implying that......only that some members tend to frequent specific forums so do not necessarily see or read posts from others they have responded to in the past if not a forum they visit routinely or frequently.

They do not have that feature enabled. Lots of people don't. I don't know if you just don't believe me or what, but this is getting silly. When people post things that are not relevant to me, I skip the post. It's very easy to do.

It looks like you were going for privacy before? If you stand at your front door looking outside which direction it that? Aside from some missed pruning on the lower shrubs it seems like the only issue was putting plants/trees in the wrong place. I agree with what ken said and look at some perennials also that could really liven it up.
