Off centered sofa. How to balance?

This is my new familyroom. The two sofas are reclining and need to stay in this position otherwise they won’t recline in the corner. They are not going to be replaced so I need some ideas. Rather than center the picture on the sofa, I centered it on the wall. Notice the sofa extends on the left of the wall. I would like to use the colors in the artwork for pillows. I guess I’m looking for reassurance that this is the best starting place. Drapery samples on their way.

Thanks, Nate’sGrandma

Could we see the rest of your room?....I can understand about the sofas not reclining when they are close together. Can you center the couch we see and pull the other couch down father to make space between them? I know I finally had to eliminate the coffee table with my reclining sofa and love seat...just used end tables and it worked out fine. I like how your pillow has the same colors on it that are in your painting.

When you walk in the room the window sofa is seen first. It is centered on the window wall. I think of the two sofas it looks better centered even though there is room to move it down.

And yes, that’s another recliner in the foreground.

I call this room my fifty shades of beige. I’m also looking for a new coffee table.

Don't think the art helps - too undersized and IMO makes things worse.

If possible, I would get a bigger taller picture/art centered over the sofa and two pictures stacked to balance on end table side

ETA Can furniture be pulled down towards TV so the sofa isn't against the wall?

I know it might involve some expense, but could you put the tv on that wall and the couch on the tv wall? Looks like all would fit better that way.

Or move the tv as close to the sliders as possible, put the couches facing each other (float the off center one- maybe even angle it toward the other couch and sliders) and the recliner on the wall where the painting is.

Have you tried flipping it all around with tv on opposite wall? Put the recliner angled in front of windows with table, and then the couches in an L shape across from tv? Not sure if that wall (for tv) is wide enough?

I also like the idea of swapping the tv to the other wall.

Actually we thought about switching the furniture before we even moved in but DH insists on being able to watch it from the kitchen island or the living room. The picture below is similar to what we plan for the tv wall hopefully this year, but on a smaller scaled bookcase and larger tv. I’ll take more pictures of our open concept home in just a little bit.

So. Leaving the furniture where it is, I guess I’ll look around for larger artwork. Still 75% of the sofa even if I go taller?

Another issue I see is that the TV console is much too short for the size of the TV. There should be a few feet of space on each end past the TV. I think a new coffee table is a good idea since it matches the side table and, frankly, neither is as nice as it could be. I would suggest a metal and glass coffee table, and a beautiful Oriental area rug underneath, large enough that all the furniture is at least partially on it, and your room will have so much more impact. Curtain panels on each end of the windows would also make your living area look more furnished and complete.

Yes scooch the window couch to the right, taking away the end table. Put your lamp and end table you have in the corner more toward the window couch. Push art over couch more toward the wall center...I do not care for couch sticking out longer than your wall. Another idea...put tv on wall with art and couch on TV wall. Because husband likes to see TV from kitchen ....a small TV in the kitchen would do the trick. I have one and is on while I cook.

Can you move the off center sofa directly across from, and facing the window sofa then put the chair where the off center sofa is?? Then the tv can stay put.

Ingrid just to clarify, the tv console will be going away and the tv will go into a wall bookcase. I’m looking for a new coffee and end tables. Drape samples are on their way. I’m open to the idea of a glass coffee table or other suggestions but I’d rather get color from art and pillows rather than a rug for this room. On a previous thread about my living room I did take your great advice about a glass table. Thanks

RNmom good eye. I moved the sofa over another 6” and it’s now centered on the windows. The recliners all get used when family visits which is a couple times a week. So the corner is used.

Erin, I don’t like the couch sticking out beyond the wall either. My only other option would be to have the contractor back and extend the wall. Sounds expensive so I’m trying to make it work as is. The tv is going to have to stay on that wall. Currently the art is centered on the wall.

I appreciate all your ideas even if some aren’t going to work.

Now on to art - should I be looking for a vertical canvas on the left side and two square stacked pieces for the right side? If so, should they all have the same theme and colors? Suggestions?

I would try to find something way larger- vertically, that would be large enough to expand middle cushion and half to two-thirds of cushions on either side.

Stacked sides two or three should equal the height the what's to the left.

What you;re trying to achieve is balance on the wall.

I would try to keep something similar in theme and frames of whatever you choose - frames all black, stained-similarly,, gold, gold-band etc so have something in common

Just throwing this out there, but a faux tree/plant maybe could be used behind the space the sofa just out too.

I didn't read all the comments but what about a plant and new pic?

chijim Is this a better layout that I should be searching for?

Thanks for the ideas for a tall plant but I have a clock on the adjoining wall

Not quite what I was thinking for the area over the sofa - but a grouping could work

My idea is bigger art centered over sofa , then, stacked art above/behind lamp and table so you fill that area of the wall... and hopefully the wonky sofa arrangement disappears fooling the eye with the art arrangement

You need something behind the lamp and table too

Sorry but if you are going to leave furniture as is, no arrangement or artwork will ever look right on that wall...

If you must leave the tv on that wall, why don’t you try moving it down toward the doorwall, move sofa across from the other, placing the sofa table behind it. Then place the recliner on that wall.

It may take a couple days to get used to but I think with it being balanced, you will be pleased in the end.

Maybe it's been mentioned, I haven't read every comment, but have you considered floating the sofa.........pull it off the wall and place it closer to, and opposite the tv, with a sofa table behind it? Then pull the other sofa toward the slider so that it lines up with the floating sofa.

Ideally.....I'd sell one sofa and buy another single recliner. :)

The window sofa is not centered on window so that would help tremendously
