Help with grout colour please

Hi All,

Hope you can help me finally arrive at a grout color for my bathroom floor, Mapei/Custom/TEC - whichever has the colour that will work best.

I do not want high contrast and the base of this tile is relatively white compared to other more variegated carrara tiles I have seen on Houzz and Pinterest pics. So I'm shying away from Delorean Gray, Mapei silver, even Custom platinum seems a bit dark for my likIng, I want a soft grey, not white for the sake of upkeep, that will not blur/blend so much that it creates a mucky look, but also will not be a stark dark outline as I'm not going for a super retro look either.

However, the popular light greys are still leaving me uncertain as some of them seem to be too taupe/brown for the tone of my tile.

I am considering Mapei "Rain" however I see almost no reference to this being used in the bloggesphere which worries me...perhaps it is too blue? I think it may be simlar to Custom's Platinum as they seem very close on the paper pamphlets, but I don't have a stick of Platinum. I also kind of like Mapei "Cobblestone" however again it is hardly ever referenced online compared to warm grey, platinum, and even Frost, which seems too white for me.

This pic shows a few sticks that I have on hand...from L to R in the photo are: Mapei frost, Warm Grey (paper strip), Cobblestone, TEC silverado, Rain, Platinum (paper strip).

My first instinct is that Rain best matches the colour tone of the grey in the tile but worry it is too blue. I also like cobblestone for a warmer look but thne worry it may read as too brown/greige. Why is this so difficult??? It was easier to name my children!

Does anyone have photos of similar toned tile, grouted? Would love to see your pics and hear what grout you used. Also if anyone has used Rain or Cobblestone with any tile, pleaes also share pics so I can see this in an actual application vs. Just a sample stick.

Thanks in advance!

The one on the left (Mapei frost) looks good. And you mentioned you don't want much contrast so I'd go light. I have white Mapei grout in my shower and it's a nightmare to keep clean.

If this is for the floor, I would go a bit darker, like the second from the left. In my experience, the grout always seems to come out a little lighter than the samples. And it will get dirty.

Best thing would be to do a small sample board.

    MAPEI Warm Gray.

Third one from the left. It will look a bit lighter once installed and match the darker veins in the marble.

Chispa do you think the third (Cobblestone) will dry and lighten to look more like the second one (Warm grey) once installed?

I did Custom's platinum for my black/white bathroom and it's perfect. It's light and not too blue or brown. I like it because it's barely there but not white.

Christina, I have found that the powdered grout always ends up drying a bit lighter than the sample sticks. I usually pick the color that is the best match and then pick one just a bit darker to get the right final result.

This is one of the reasons I really like the Fusion Pro type of grout. They are premixed and there is color consistency. Many tile installers don't like it because it requires a slightly different application method, but not really any harder once you figure it out. You need to work in much smaller sections.

Which grout color did you end up going with?

Looks great! Pretty shower curtain and I like the simple lines of your bath. Can you share more pics of your bathroom and details, please? Where did you find your vanity?

Thanks! It was a simple/budget bathroom so it’s nice to hear compliments. The vanity was just from Ikea, and it’s been 3 years, no issues with it. Shower curtain homemade with fabric from Tonic Living in Toronto (now shifted to fully online business if you want to check it out..their instagram stories give great ideas). Happy to share a few more pics

There’s not too much to it as it’s tiny, fixtures and decor from all over - home depot, lowes, homesense, wayfair, etc. Nothing custom/designer! I can share details of anything you specifically want to know about.

So glad to hear you've had no issues with your Ikea vanity. I'm considering it for our low-budget ensuite remodel. Is it really that roomy that it negates the need for a medicine cabinet? Is it an Ikea faucet as well? The vanity is the Godmorgon? Which colour? I was looking at their oak option a couple of years ago but it doesn't seem available anymore. I'm in Montreal and familiar with Tonic Living. Their fabric selection is fab! Thanks for reminding me of the custom shower curtain option - a great way to infuse a bit more personality into the space. (I'm going to price that out and update my budget accordingly.)

Yes Godmorgan but this colour discontinued I think. very roomy drawer. If you want to put a lot of small items in it like a medicine cabinet you’ll need to put in some trays/organizers. We are just using the dividers that came with it, but as it’s the kids bathroom I only use it for toilet paper, shampoo supply, and even towels for that bathroom! I’ll send a pic later.

Great! Thanks. Btw, I was just on Tonic Living's site and read that they've permanently closed their custom sewing department.

Drawers - could fit a lot more in the top one. Those are avg sized shampoo bottles standing up

Thank you for sharing these pics. Really helpful visual! Glad to see your towels in there. That's the space I need as well.

Thanks again for answering my questions, Christina. For some reason (Houzz glitch *cough, cough*), your comment about your various sources as well as the pic of your cute hexagon shelves popped up only today. You say you've nothing custom in your bathroom but that shower curtain is custom, no? In any case, I like the idea of finding quality items at affordable prices in big box stores, especially for a bathroom which can get very expensive very quickly.

May I ask if you're pleased with your Ikea faucet? I was on their site again today and I seem to recall the choice of vanities/sinks/faucets was simpler to navigate before. How wide is your vanity?

Sorry I meant nothing custom that I paid a professional for lol! Custom DIY yes - for the shower curtain and hex shelves (thanks to hubby). Decor posters from Etsy I didn’t get an Ikea faucet, ours is a Delta from home depot/Lowe’s...my mistake was in choosing polished nickel for everything Else, then realizing that the ikea sink drain is not removable and is chrome. So if you want everything to match, keep that in mind. Our Godmorgan is 40” wide.

Ah, good to know! Thanks. The difference is not noticeable in your pics and I doubt it detracts in real life. Your vanity looks good against the wall and offers a practical spot for the hand towel. How large is your bathroom? Ours is 5' x 8' with a clunky 36" vanity between the toilet and shower so I was considering the 32 inch Godmorgon. Now I'm wondering if it might be worth it to move the plumbing, especially since the door opens to the toilet.

This is so helpful! I was looking at grout today for my upstairs hall bath Reno. It’s a small bathroom with 7 inch Carrara hex floor and 8 x 16 Carrara tiles floor to ceiling. I picked the rain because it’s small and I thought having the grout lines disappearing particularly on the walls will help with the illusion of being bigger. They start tiling tomorrow !

H M - How did you end up liking the rain grout?? I am considering this for my Carrara marble hexagon floor tile. But as OP mentioned, there are hardly any reviews of this color! It seems like it would be a lovely match, but I wonder if it might look bluish? Thanks!

Sorry I didn't end up using Rain...you are right, it read too blue for my particular batch of carrera when I put them up close. I ended up going a bit darker with Mapei Silver, darker than I had planned but the correct tone and I am happy with it.

Thanks!! I appreciate your comment! I’ve also considered frost, but think it may stain too easily, so silver is actually a top pick for me right now, too! :)

I did end up using rain grout. I am happy with it. I was worried about blue undertones but my Carrara was also cool toned. The vanity is a neutral gray. Kohler mohair grey and we used matte black kohler fixtures with a pure white quartz top

Didn’t mean to post the unfinished picture. But here’s another before the tub glass went in

That looks great H M! It makes SUCH a difference the actual carrerra tiles you have. I have other slightly different white marbles in another bathroom and kitchen backsplash, and for those renos I was lucky that my tiler happened to have open bags of frost and warm grey grout in his possession, so he was able to take my actual mosaic tiles and put a pile of the grout powder in between to help visualize what it might look like. My long winded point is that he did show me frost and it looked almost identical to avalanche in real life, i.e. pretty much white. So if you're looking for a grey grout to highlight the shape of your tiles, then frost will be too light. If you want a really light grout to have the grout lines be less visible, then you may prefer it. But keeping them white is another story...

H M - This looks AMAZING and my cool-colored marble looks almost identical. I’m sold! Can’t thank you enough for sharing the photos. Your bathroom is beautiful - I really love the color of your vanity and the matte black is perfect. I’ve been searching for images for days and this was so helpful! Thanks again :)
