Beauty is a subjectified No-thing FROM Some-Thing, it is an illusion, individually fabricated in the individual brain. This one IS a "competitor" - and I do not even care, on this occasion, that the bloom is lightly drooping. A beautiful result, it reminds me of "(American) Emerald" - the shape of the floret is even more appealing. Thank you for sharing!

Hans , I forgot to mention it ! this is the second year it blooms ! Last year I had 1 scape with 4 florets. but it is true that this is a vigourous one.

Normally I prefer strong colors but in this case i like most the "for information only" and the N3.

For the first time ever I have a papilio that will bloom this year (we will not discuss how many paps I've killed). I think I will try papilio pollen on Emerald and Evergreen. I love seeing pictures of people's crosses!

I do not know WHEN I proclaimed that the best crosspollination project -

IF you have H.cybister and H.papilio "handy" - then to crossbreed them.

Afaik it does not matter which of the two is the seed producer. If you use H.papilio (the common clone thereof) as the seed producer, you will obtain up to 140 seeds (I kid you not) per seed pod. Multiplied with two florets on a scape, this means up to 280 seeds, whereas with H.cybister "Chico" as the seed parent, it is up to 25 seeds per pod, and when you take account for 6 florets per scape then it is, anyhow, a total of 150 seeds. In either case you will obtain an amazing variety in the offspring, which is not necessarily to be expected out of a crossbreeding project using two "pure species".

An explanation for this phaenomenon is provided by the occasional proclamation which I read, namely that "H.papilio is quite not a pure species Hippeastrum". On the other hand I DO consider "Chico" a representative of the pure species H.cybister, and just a careful selected seedling thereof, with outstanding shape, respectively. As regards "Reggae" (on THIS Occasion, the depth of the color is outstanding!) I am not AS certain, but I am rather certain. May be the only one who knows is the breeder of them: Fred Meyer!

Did you wonder (like i did) "whence do those twisted floral segments come?" namely more or less conspicuously in those hybrids as shown above. H.papilio is the "culprit" on this occasion. Generally you will not observe twisted floral Segments in H.papilio, but I observed them, when I bloomed them under other conditions than normal, at low temperatures (in the unheated Basement, THEN) that was. I will try to provide a picture link. Alas, I lost a large ressource of pictures when my previous Computer broke.

I grow H papilio in my greenhouse kept at about 7 ° C in winter .... at this temperature I have never observed twisted floral segments, however they bloom faithfully each end of winter / spring

Elena, your Cybister Rose cross is AMAZING! I am absolutely in love with the colors and shape of the blooms!

Unfortunately, my Cybister Rose bulb did not fare well this winter. Red blotch severely damaged the bulb. I did heat treatment on the bulb (120 degrees for over 2 hours- I used a sous vide immersion cooker to keep a steady temperature) and I treated it with highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide (I think it's 35%). Now Cybister Rose is under special care inside the house. Hopefully it will survive and rebloom. I had a similar issue with Chico last year, but the damaged bulb put off a lot of bulblets. The bulblets were treated with heat and either bleach or H202 and so far this year they look good.

I discovered it was Sumatra that was heavily damaged, not Cybister Rose. However, thus far Cybister Rose is showing no signs of an emerging scape.
