Varies highly from region to region. Also, you are lacking details: Tile all the way up to the ceiling? Tile on the ceiling? Tiled shower floor or fiberglass pan? Kind of tile? Quality of tile? Plumbing included? Glass door? Regular or epoxy grout? Etc.

The best way for you to figure this out is to get those other local bids and compare them, making sure the comparisons are apples-to-apples.

Just the shower? On the lower side if someone knows what they are doing with proper waterproofing. What waterproofing system is he proposing to use?

Good luck even getting your subs on site. I did a free consult recently and had to be escorted by the homeowner on a Sunday because the builder prohibited any other contractors from the site.

Thanks for the response, were planning on tile on the floor and walls, but not on the ceiling. Rectangular tiles for the walls and smaller tiles on the floor, quoted grade 3 for both the local contractors and builder, plumbing is included and glass door is not included.

We got a couple of quotes over the past few days and the local contractors all came in around 2000-2500 for the cement board, water membrane, lay the tile and us picking out a mid grade tile using their discount. The builder is going to rough it in and plumb it. They also said it would be no problem having them come in an finish the shower while they're working elsewhere in the house just as long as they're not in the way. Thankfully the builder has been great, but since were at the top end of our budget we need to save a little where we can.

That sounds very cheap, but maybe that's a function of where you live. Is that for a complete membrane, including the walls, or what? It would be good if you checked references before selecting a contractor...particularly if you could talk to a couple of people who had jobs done several years ago to find out if their showers held up and didn't leak.

While Sophie is sugar coating the response:) No way you will get a proper shower for 2K The builder quoted you $5,800 and that was low but at least you have a chance at a decent job. Regional prices vary greatly. If you hire the guys for 2K to 2.5K we will see you back here soon. A shower is not a place to cut costs.

Ted, you are asking for nothing but trouble here. If your budget is limited as to be unable to afford a properly tiled shower, then buy acrylic modules to install. That will be over 2K with proper install labor though.
