Need Design Advice for Bathroom remodel

My primary question is…Should I keep the pocket door and doorway leading to shower area? Or should I keep the doorway but open it up to the ceiling? The doorway leading into the toilet area leads to a hallway between our kitchen and laundry room and the door next to the shower leads into a guest room. The door heights are 80 inches currently. And the pocket door is roughly 28 inches wide.

I’m aiming for a more contemporary or transitional style. I hope this makes sense. Thank you.

I think the entire area will seem much larger if you can remove the entire wall where the pocket door is BUT it looks like that will leave your toilet in the middle of that area. So if you are ready to move that toilet take the whole wall out for a much bigger bathroom and more options for layout. IF the toilet stays there then I would keep the wall and the pocket door. This give the option of someone being able to use the toilet when the shower is already being used.

I was considering removing the whole wall between the toilet and shower area but we can’t quite remove the whole wall unless we change the entire layout because there’s a closet behind part of that wall.

So then my next question is, if I did remove the entire wall, what’s the best layout for this space? Without the wall, the bathroom measures 143 inches by 71 inches. Both exterior doorways must stay.

IF you are going to move stuff I would keep the shower where it is, move the toilet to the end by the shower and that will give you room for a nice long counter and double sinks if you want them. If you need a replacement for the closet I would add a storage cabinet next to the door where the sink was. A cabinet will take less room and give you more storage than a built in closet like your currently have, Opening it up like this will help the room function better and it will feel (and look) 10x bigger.

Thank you so much Jamie. That’s the advice I needed. I was going into this without a plan because the renovation originated out of a leak. And I love your idea.

You are very welcome. I am currently replacing an entire Kitchen because of a leak so I feel your pain! Remember this is your chance to do it right! So take your time and really think about how the room will both look and function. You don't want to spend all this time and money and then think "I wish I had done ??? different".

Toilet is being relocated as I write this. And it didn’t cost very much to do it. What’s funny is we discovered a broken sewer pipe so we were SUPER fortunate that we decided to move the toilet!
