Winter was HARD on my sans. since I grow them outside. Most didn't get winter protection which turned out to be a mistake in some cases! He is a picture of my Twisted Sister. I had many pots in different locations around the yard (I sell them at my succulent club sale). Our freeze took out most of them (the Twisted Sisters) but i have 2 that look like this one.

Separated some pups today. After hearing they like sandy soil I went out and got some free sand. There is lots more andI heard sand is good for starting banana corms.

Sand is the worst substance to plant them in. Sand compacts very tightly, holds water, and smothers the roots

They are in soil with a handful of sand.

That looks like the same thing I did to some plants awhile ago. They weren't happy with me.
I was told "Sand will help with drainage." "Snake plants like growing in
sand" So I put what I thought was 2+2 together, but got 0.
Here's a sans. shortly after repotting out of my miracle-gro + sand mix, and into
a 2:1 MG:Perlite mix (that still wasn't draining well).
The sand mix would stay wet for weeks even with a drainage hole. This MG mix was still staying soaked for a week, too.

This rotting at the tip was from root rot. It was around 15 months old then. I repotted it again that week.
Here it is just 7 months later after being in a gritty mix.

Sand in a pot is much different than sand on the ground.
Outside, plants could have around 10' of drainage below them, so when a sandy soil gets wet, it has a place to go.

In a plastic pot, it's going to retain a ton of water and it isn't going anywhere except out through evaporation on top.

Sand mix works great with my over grown agaves and big euphorbias. I also used heavy clay to try to keep them controlled. I ended up giving them away. The thinking is, if you love them and want them, don't use sand. Perlite is best due to it's light weight and ease of use. A mix of cactus potting soil and perlite is best. Every body is different due to growing conditions and their watering habits.
