I am in the process of painting my kitchen cabinets right now and it is indeed a HUGE job. A minimum 12 step process including thoroughly cleaning the cabinets and hinges then 3 coats of textured base coat, sanding, glazing, then 3 coats of water-based poly. It does look beautiful but this job is not for the faint-of-heart!

I agree with Bill...def do the walls first. it is a huge job and why personally I'd buy unfinished cabinets and paint them or stain them before redoing. Your brave! lol

I painted kitchen cabinets and it wasn't nearly as difficult as described above but I only had about 6 cabinets. The house was 50 years old and the cabinets were grimy with some type of thick shellac. These were my steps:
1. Removed all doors and hinges
2. Used the liquid sanding stuff available from home depot. Wiped down all doors and cabinet surfaces with it twice per directions. This left a more textured surface that the paint can adhere to.
3. Painted all cabinet surfaces with two coats of antique white hi-gloss paint.
4. Added knob hardware (huge difference in modernizing the look!)
5. Re hung the doors.
Hugehugehuge compliments and the results stood up for many years. I moved after 7 yrs and they still looked as good as the day I finished. Do not be dissuaded I've done a lot of projects that seem impossible if you follow all the instructions on every product being sold to you. Sure you can make a cabinet tough enough to withstand being installed at disneyworld, but do you really need that?

I painted my kitchen cabinets, I have a large kitchen and it was a big job! I guess it all depends on the size of the kitchen. Here's an ideabook with how-to advice: https://www.houzz.com/magazine/from-the-pros-how-to-paint-kitchen-cabinets-stsetivw-vs~4415504

Do you have photos of the kitchen ?
