Gray TV Room Decor

You guys have been so helpful in other areas of our new home, so I wanted to ask for help with a color palette for a spare room we turned into the TV room. I know gray is “over” but we really love the wall color (BM Cement Gray).
Previously we had a purple rug, which I like, but it tends to bring out the lilac in the walls. Plus, I envisioned this space being bright and cozy. I’m not sure it’s the right fit. I thought about yellow but I don’t love it with our floors.
Obviously we also need pillows, curtains, art, and eventually a new TV stand and side tables. But our budget right now is only around $200. Please help me make the most of it!
Also, privacy is a concern but I still want to allow plenty of light in through the windows during the day.
We thought about getting the white cover for our ektorp sofa, but I’m worried it won’t be dog friendly. Does the dark grey work?

Ps, we already have this painting which I like a lot, but again am concerned it’s too dark.

I would change the area rug. It’s too much dark on dark. I know the worries of making the place pet friendly. You might want to try a washable this rug. I have a just rug in our living and it works well with our gray sofa.

I like the gray sofa and the painting. Cant a tv room be a bit dark? Whats happening so far feels cozy . If it was me, I'd be looking for pillows and artwork with the oranges from the art and purple from the rug. Maybe gray curtains, darker like the furniture or to match the walls with roller blind or woven blinds, so you can let the sunshine in or go full on cocoon.

Thank you bossyvossy! It actually came with us from our tiny apartment so we got lucky, lol.

    it's a nice room

with 200$, I'd be looking for a light/s on Craigslist/Etsy..a floor one, a table one..you can score something really cool you'll love anywhere and always..and I might be hunting a pillow that will bring all the colors together..not sure your style, but for the sake of showing the colors:

    https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/tufted-ayla-pillow?category=decorative-pillows&color=011

(has your sofa, plaid, rug and even art inside..))

this one is simpler, but cheaper and maybe more user friendly being made from outdoor fabric. won't be as comfy I guess, but also has some nice color combo inside. I like it less because it's too obviously geometrical, next to your plaid, while I like more mix, but again, just to illustrate

    https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/kanica-indooroutdoor-pillow?category=decorative-pillows&color=079

that one's quite long..but the colors might work as well

    https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/marisol-pillow?color=066&quantity=1&type=REGULAR

(they have 20% during weekend if you become a member blablah, plus ship free. but obviously there are tons of pillows just about everywhere.)

or. I'd hunt a light..put up art ..and slowly worry about rest of the stuff later

you can start with a rug too, if yours seems off to you, it's just harder to do for 200$. but possible of course.

don't worry about what's over if you like the color. who cares.I like how purple brings out lilac, but then I love both purple and lilac, so..:)

Thank you for all the advice! I would describe my style as transitional.
It’s good to know that the purple could work if I want it to. I am a huge fan of purple, I think the problem is I’m just getting sick of it after several years with the same purple rug. Plus, this is the sunniest room in an otherwise dark house so I don’t want to ruin that.

What color should I do for a rug if not purple? Is grey in grey way too much?

I like the deep purple area rug, but it doesn't read as light and bright with your charcoal sofa. So, the biggest part of your budget right now will likely be an area rug. Because you have baseboard heaters, I'd recommend Roman blinds, which are a relatively easy DIY. The most expensive part will be the fabric, but if you shop around you can find some good deals. Don't forget Craigslist for some great deals on area rugs.

If you buy new, Cost Plus has some affordable area rugs. Here's a tribal style one in jute. It's got some colors to inform accessories but is light enough not to darken your room.

    Chindi Safara Rug

A nice geometric option if you decide to do gray on gray. I think wood tones and green would look great with this one.

    Morrison Area Rug

Another option with lots of colors to choose from.

Hi, ellenoir. I wanted to share a mock-up of the Morrison rug with
your artwork in your room. It may not be your style preference, but I
think you can see how its palette might work.

Thank you Manon! I do like the rug a lot and I have a discount coupon to World Market because it’s my birthday :)

Happy birthday I hope you have a wonderful day.

I love purple so I would try to make it work with hints of purple in pillows and art and a throw. Good luck :-)

Good! Go see it in person and see if you like it. happy birthday to you!

Ok, so we dug through the curtains we already had and found these. I like them, but I’m a bit worried because I don’t want it to clash with patterns in the rug?
Here’s the rugs I was thinking of.

Nice find on the curtains! It's always fun to go shopping in your own house.

I prefer the first rug. It's got nice texture and unobtrusive coloring. I think it will be more versatile in the long run, as well.

If you're interested, here's a good story on Houzz that discusses mixing patterns.
