Peony Suppliers - Exclusiviality

I don't know much about penoie's other than I love their blooms...

Dumb ? but when I look at the various place, AD, Songsparrow, Hiddensprings, Adelman, etc - what makes some places carry peonies that others don't . Are certain ones exclusive due to dist. rights ? I literally was googling for one type, and only came up with a handful of places that seem to carry them ?

In others peony types, they seem to be a dime a dozen ?

I was thinking about a pairing of Brother Chuck and Etched Salmon. BC seems to be everywhere, where ES seems to be only available at select retailers ?

A few that are from breeders you will only find at that breeder for a number of years. For the rest it depends on several factors but mostly that growers digging rotation. Some peonies such as ES you could toss a piece of root into the ground and within a couple of years have a root large enough to sell. But others such as Old Faithful it takes longer for a plant to grow large enough to divide or the plant may only provide a few divisions. Some growers go for the quick growth peonies while others will nurse the harder to grow plants for several years just so that they are not lost in commerce. A wise grower looks and talks to their competition to see what their rotation is so that when one is offering they do not. By doing so they can provide roots when their competition does not. Helps keep the price up and prevents having to sell or destroy unneeded plants at the end of the season. Same for most nurseries that actually grow their own plants.

Plants do go in and out of fashion and once BC has flooded the market it will become harder to find.

Excellent info Maifleur. Any suggestions for a starter double petalish set ? A pairing of double petalish types.

We have a couple on the property. None that looks like the double petals in the OP posted We have a tree one that was given by family member when they moved into a condo, and that tree peony is like 6 1/2 feet high.

Since most of the growers do not ship until fall visit as many gardens as you can. If you see someone working in their garden that has a peony that you like ask if they know what peony it is. Public gardens will sometimes have labels on the plants but double check on the web to see if that label is correct. Sometimes visitors will pick up labels to see them better then stick them back any where.

I googled it, and there seems to be a ~peony garder/retailer~ about a 1 1/2 hrs drive from me. Don't see it mentioned here at GW, but Peony Envy

Only purchased once from Peony Envy and that was many years ago. At that time was simply a reseller of Chinese grafted imports. I recognized this because their supplier was the same as the one that supplied Heartland Peony Society plants that year. Is now an American Peony Society member and had a tour last year at their annual meeting. I was not able to go so cannot comment about what if any display plants that she might have. If you go north there are several gardens that are in New York and Pennsylvania. The Mid Atlantic Peony Society is active in that area.

Just wanted to reply re: your post on seeing the in the garden. Ha, when I look at these, it's like the 64or 128 crayola crayon box. So many to choose, and all are great. Granted, when looking online and seeing one in ~real life~ sometimes changes your impression. In other things in life, seeing a pic of if would not interested me, but then seeing it in person, definately changed my opinion on it. ehh, this year, I feel like I'm all about the double petals per se. Wanted to add some super huge petal count David Austin tree, double petal peonies, etc.
