Trying to save a plant (disease???)

I had a plant and one day it's 2 branches fell off


I am trying to save it so I put them in water and they are growing roots. YAY!!!!

However, I see a slime around the roots and I am worried that that's what killed the parent.



I change the water every other day and I rinse the roots under running water.

Is this slime normal?

How can I clean it?

I am not a gardener so I don't have any experience. All I do is treat my plants with LOVE.



What can I do?
