Layout and design ideas?

Hi Everyone, looking for your collective wisdom and style since I don't have much to speak of. :)

We remodeled our house a couple of years ago, now have an open kitchen and since we're casual people and like to entertain we opted for a large kitchen island instead of a separate dining area.

I'm ready for a new look in or living room and want in to blend well with the open kitchen/dining area.

We loooove our brick wall and the fireplace even though the corner fireplace makes the room a little more challenging to lay out.

Here are some photos. Ideas are welcome and appreciated!

Love to tackle challenging spaces. It is tricky with the fireplace and probably how you enter the seating area from the kitchen. Are those windows behind the chairs of a slider? Do you actually use the fireplace? Is the door in the corner an entry door?

Hi Jennifer, those are windows behind the chairs. I'm planning on blinds or other window coverings aside from the fabric curtains.

The red door is our front entry door.

I was actually wondering whether to consider two sitting areas... one small one facing the fireplace and then a larger one closer to the kitchen island. Not sure if that's just too much/busy for the space?

The pictures are helpful, but space is hard to determine without measurements. Are you buying new furniture?

Good point! Here are some measurements. The length only reflects the area beyond the island chairs.

And yes, planning to buy new furniture and accessories but have no idea what to buy. And thank you!

One couch & two chairs are enough. Get a large ottoman for extra seating & place in front of couch. Either center couch at fireplace at an angle. Or put couch's backside to kitchen. Put chairs on each side or fireplace.

I really like your kitchen and your island.

I would push the sofa against the back wall under the art with the two end tables on either side with the lamps to open up the area. I do think a large possiblly dark leather tufted ottoman (there are so many styles of these) would be a great addition centered in front of the tufted sofa to serve as coffee table with tray or as extra seating, very casual. Then two chairs across the sofa with another one on the other side of the fireplace. The last chair I'm thinking could be paired also with a single ottoman to serve as a lounge space against the back brick wall to the right of the window. This is working the arrangement with what you currently have so I'm not too sure what you were changing out.

Thanks Mon. I like this. Even though I'm planning on getting new furniture, I'm going to try this out when I'm back in town this weekend. I'll post a picture!

Two ottomans together offers added flexibility, just in case you guys did tend to move the room around when the guitars get played. :)

Hi Asia, sorry I dropped off there...I’m still getting used to navigating the app. Thanks for the measurements. I saw Mon made some very nice suggestions too.

You could do a sectional with chairs or a sofa and two chairs. Either one could work in this space. Here are two of our designs to help with ideas.

Mon, I realized after I started moving the couch around that this was the original location of the couch- under the art.

Our room is kind of wide so I'm wanting to pull the sofa and chairs away from the walls. I also like the sectional and ottoman idea.

I decided to try out one of the design apps (modsy) and I'm waiting for designs to come back in a couple of days. I'm still torn about whether to reupholster and keep the chairs (probably a dark grey) and get a lighter grey loveseat or small sectional or start completely from scratch with something else.

I'm hoping that with the 3D model I can try out different looks without committing to anything yet.

This is so exciting and confusing for the stylistically challenged.

    Any thoughts about the grey?

And thanks for all of the suggestions!

I'm still having a hard time envisioning how to tie the layout in to the corner fireplace AND the kitchen island dining area.

Because the brick is more of a reddish/brown I feel like warm colors go better in the space, but I'm not too sure how many changes you are going to make but just remember that sectionals really close off the area, limit access, and entry.

Whitewashing the brick will allow you to introduce greys easier, I'm not against sectionals because they are comfortable.

Do you mind walking around the room to enter the seating area? I really like the last layout offered, but if the natural entry to the space from the kitchen is an issue, it does make the options more limited.
