I'd do black shutters and a black door to complement the red brick and white siding along with a porch swing

Hi cunning13. Have you considered a lighter color for your front door? I ask because your door is quite recessed under the porch roof and it's not real visible even though it's painted a nice red color. It might look more welcoming in a white, for instance, like the upper story, with some great wreaths hung on each door. If the white would be too bright for you, a very creamy yellow, (nothing bright!), could play off the brick very nicely. Then your shutters could be glossy black and the whole house would look really sharp.

I would paint the shutters black and keep the red door! I think it looks great. I would suggest heavier square columns for your porch posts.Perhaps you might want to even add a railing to close it in more and make it like a room.

A small table between the chairs to place a drink on would be nice, and some comfy cushions on the swing and rockers will make this feel like an outdoor room..

hsharrington, did you get new ones or enclose the old ones with a kit?

handymam: Totally replaced the posts. Used 8" x 8" square redwood columns. Painted them white to match the trim on eaves and windows.

Not trying to hijack this thread, this might be of interest to cunning and others, but harrington, how hard of a job is that?

The important part is to support the porch/overhang roof while the columns are being replaced. Much like you would support an interior weight bearing wall while putting in new support beam. We were able to re-use the concrete footing under the existing posts, so it all happened in part of one day. Of course, my contractor, Dennis Reynolds of Construction Resources, is smart as a whip and really knows his stuff!

Yeah I do think beefier posts and a railing would really make it pop

Really nice home! I also like the black shutters. I would def replace the columns with something more substantial- chunky square posts is my thought. I would also change up the curved board- not sure what it is called- to a straight edge
