It depends on how deep they are planted. If they are deeper than an inch or two it might be better looking than a hole of irises in your garden. Don't worry about digging them up if you do. They are pretty hardy plants.

I never cut the leaves, unless I’m transplanting the rhizomes or if the leaves have been damaged. Then I’ll cut the leaves by about half their length. Cut at an angle, not straight across. Otherwise, I never cut.

When properly planted, you should be able to see (or almost see) the rhizome just under the dirt. In other words, very very shallowly planted.

I dug up a lot of my iris's when I moved last July. They are still in my garage. Should I plant them now? I'm in Ohio and the temps are anywhere from 30 to 60 now days.

nwaller, I'd get them in the ground as soon as you can. If the roots are dry I'd soak them first. Make sure you water them more frequently until you start seeing new growth then taper back to a regular, as needed schedule, depending on the variety. Might need more shade in the first couple of weeks if your spring turns very warm very fast, What type of iris did you move, bearded, Siberian, species, spuria??

Thank you so much for your advice. I really don't know the species. They're all very large. Especially some that are peach colored.......huge blooms!

Question... I am moving July 1. I have a bed of iris, about 40 or so, that I was given and planted last fall. I want to take them when I move. I planted them a little too deep and only got a few blooms but they're nice and healthy so should I wait and transplant them in July? Or go ahead and dig them now and store them? I'm just wondering if it's better to dig them now since it's still officially Spring, if maybe July is too hot to put them thru all that stress. What about the leaves, should they be trimmed back? I've never had Iris and I just love them. Thanks
