Hutch dilemma - what color would work best

My hutch, which I inherited from my grandmother, does not match my dining room table. I’ve kicked around the idea of painting it or gel staining. I’d appreciate any input into possible color choices that might work better in the space. (Ignore the willow cuttings in the corner that are waiting for better weather to go outside.) Thanks for your input!!

    I love your hutch!

I like your table too but can't see it properly

you can leave the hutch as is(I would) or change its color..you can change the table's top, that'd be cool..knowing myself, I'd go for changing chairs' upholstery..)) so many ways to tweak this room, a bit more or just ever so slightly, precisely because it's beautiful.

Of course, it makes more sense to change the upholstery on the chairs than the table, like I suggested!

Cpaul took the words out of my mouth. After studying the hutch I was going to say the same thing. Paint in an expresso to match the chair upholstery and switch out the hardware.

I applied Old English scratch remover (dark). It definitely darkened the color. I’m going to wait a few days or so and then do another coat. Here’s a pic at the same time of day as the first with the same lighting. :-)

What color slipcovers would everyone recommend for the chairs? I’m going to look into those and some new hardware this weekend.

The stain you did is nice, I wouldn't take it any darker. Not with dark walls. That is one beautiful piece of furniture!

Rbumbry - Looks good darkened. I honestly wouldn't change out the hardware. I think that's the hardware that looks correct on those pieces. I like the hutch. I'd consider altering the table first.

Tnfarmhouse - Didn't your name used to be Juddgirl or Judygal? Something like that? I swear I remember that hutch and foyer from back in the GW days.

I would update the hardware on the hutch.

The hutch really suits your aesthetic, based on the cute little stool and the rug. Beautiful.

For your chairs I can see something with a bit of sheen, like raw silk or velvet. But to be honest I'd be keeping my eyes open for classic colonial or fiddle back dining chairs for this room.

Please don't change the hardware. You'll have to refinish because the finish under the handles will be worn; you'll be able to see the outlines.

Great point regarding the finish under the handles, Lindsey! I also love your fabric suggestions for slip covers! I have been keeping my eye out for chairs. I haven’t seen anything that grabbed me just yet. ;-)

Thanks to you all for the wonderful suggestions!!!

I had to smile seeing your hutch! I have one very similar to it , my husband bought it for me many years ago and we still have it in our second home. It is hard rock maple and has withstood lots of years of use! These colonial revival pieces were very popular in the sixties and seventies and built to last. I would keep the good quality hardware!

    Embrace the aesthetic;)

Aulwood scratch cover does a better job with scratches than Old English scratch cover: seems to pick up the color of the wood in more natural tones.

Appears to be available through Amazon, too.

sheeisback - yes, I was juddgirl2 in the GW days :)

Darkening the hutch looks nice! Can you share what paint color on your wall is? Thanks!

Hi Sharon, the paint color is Benjamin Moore’s Charlotte Slate at 50% strength.

Yay! I was sheesharee then. Always happy to 'see' people and homes from before. :)

Lynartist, that chair is beautiful!!! I’m totally on the lookout! I think that style would work much better in that space.

Thanks! Good luck with the rest of your dining room.

Ps. I also like your rug and a chair similar to Lyn's suggestion.

I have a similar hutch made of pine. I just upgraded so am planning a redo too. I hope to remove the doors and hinges then paint it and use it in the guest room for books and linens. I would never paint over quality wood. If you lose the top piece then you lose tons of storage, I hope you don't. A credenza is not a hutch!!!

rbumbry, the chair I posted is from Hooker furniture but these Windsor chairs can be found in different price points. Ethan Allen makes a nice one that is a bit simpler and here are a few more!
lynartist, thanks for those links! I’m keeping my eyes open because I live within an easy drive of an area with a large Amish population, so many people around here have hand-crafted, Amish-made furniture. I’m hoping to score some gently used chairs in that manner. Patience is a virtue I know I need to work on, so this will be a test for me. ;-)
Keep us posted; good luck. A black finish will keep it a bit more current!
It kind of escaped me that I had 8 Ethan Allen chairs in my kitchen, they are more of a cranberry color than black, but I switched them up to get a feel for the style. I’m not sure what I’ll be doing with the table and mirrors on the opposite side of the room. But here are pics with the other chairs.
    Yikes! They look gorgeous!!!
    Love your chandelier too!!!

I love those chairs in there...in that color. I also love that the table is more contemporary....it's unexpected and clean.

    Re-use, recycle, re-purpose...good job!

Rbumbry! Can’t believe you were holding out on us;)! How wonderful you had these fabulous chairs!!! They are perfect!!!
I honesty forgot I had 8. I thought I only had 6 because those were the ones used upstairs. I went down in the basement today and was pleasantly surprised. Haha. Thank you all for the sweet comments and thank you most of all for the fabulous advice!!!!!

Beautiful piece with great updated stain. Please DO change the hardware which is too dated and too blah to add oomph to your lovely room. It will take some work to stain where the old hardware was, but that is worth the update. The old hardware cheapens the piece.

dretutz, I would be interested to see what hardware you would suggest...

Yeah, me too;)! Not sure it would be easy to replace the nice oversized solid brass hardware!

Perfection!!! Those chairs are gorgeous! Everything looks great. I love your wall color too! What color is it?

Colors in pictures are difficult to see. The pictures look great--how do you like in real life? You mentioned doing something to the table? The sideboard and chandy are black. The table is a dark stain, chairs are cranberry and play well with the rug and curtains and then we are back to your inherited hutch which is the lightest. I think it is a statement to have one piece that is obviously inherited-passed down. I would leave it in its natural state to celebrate the gift. Possibly the frame on the mirror should pair with the chair or table color?

Thanks, arcy_gw! I struggle to get accurate color pics with my phone. The chandelier is actually an antique bronze/brass color. Now that I switched out the chairs, the room feels like it works better overall. :-) That mirror might have to go at some point. It’s not high quality by any means. Do you think a mirror is best on that wall, or would a large artwork be better?
This is a photo in morning light.
Thanks, aktillery9!! The color is Benjamin Moore’s Charlotte Slate at 50% strength.

Just wanted to say your room is looking gorgeous! I love the hutch and I'm so happy you found a way to darken the stain. I love beautiful stained wood and while I think tnfarmhousefixin did such a beautiful job painting their hutch, I would have been sad if you'd painted yours. Thank you for sharing.

I spy a little green bunny on your console table....I would love to see some more things like that as a table centerpiece...I think that earthy green looks stunning with cranberry...

I think if you do a mirror it could be larger and hung vertically!
The chandelier could be dropped down just a bit too. Not sure if you have a few extra links in the chain;)!

I have a very similar piece, made of hard rock maple. The hardware on mine is in excellent condition, much like yours, and I would never consider replacing it. You wouldn’t find anything current that would look appropriate, or be as well made, IMHO. I don’t feel it’s “dated” - it’s authentic for the piece.

Pennydesign, I had some other green Easter decorations so I grouped them now. I have a white runner but it’s in line to be washed and ironed. Lol
  • 8 years ago
Lynartist, I do have some extra links! I just s have to convince my brother-in-law to put them in for me. He’s the handy one in our bunch.

Awww....SO so cute. I love it!

Now I'm inspired to do something with my table which is, at the moment, covered in board game pieces...

    Lovely table tablescape!
Pricklypearcactus, thank you so much! Your name is fabulous! Love it!
Beth, could this scratch cover be used on oak kitchen cabinets that are in great condition that just need a little refreshing.
    Thank you Harley
Harley, I’d give the scratch cover a try on the inside or a cabinet door or in an inconspicuous location. I’m actually contemplating trying it on some of my cabinets. If I do, I’ll let you know how it goes.
