Personally, for a first jewel orchid I would have suggested Ludisia (aka Haemaria) discolor. That one actually is easy.

Macodes petola, on the other hand, is a diva. If you give her what she wants, she performs well. If you don't, she'll have a major hissy cow and die on you. Lower light like phal lighting should be fine. Do not allow the media to dry out. This one does want RH 50% or higher.

Where do you live? A lot depends on light, temps and whether you are growing this inside or out.

Easy to grow in Florida, where I live, but I have no idea where you are. You need to provide that info.

I live in the DC area which is obviously too cold for most orchids so I bought this jewel orchid with the intention of having it as a houseplant. I currently have it in a small glass terrarium, to keep up the humidity, on a shelf where my Phal has been happy. They get bright morning light and then a medium ambient light throughout most of the day. A week in and it still looks okay. Here's to hoping!
