Help coordinating wall decor ✔️

Hi! I got some very good advice on here previously and welcome any feedback on this issues I’m having. First things first- it’s a very unfinished project, so have no fear... I’m planning to purchase rugs, plants, and my fireplace is going to get a makeover too.

No matter what my fireplace looks like, I have a beautiful, very large piece of art that I want as the main focal point above the mantle— it my hand-drawn wedding ketubah (see photo). I know there will need to be some other items resting on the mantle with that, but I’m really stuck on how to pull together the wall decor above the mantle, on the decorative/display shelving on the opposite wall, and on the blank wall behind the sofas end table. We have some very cool, unique artsy pieces but I dont want to overdo it.

I’d appreciate any advice on how your style the shelves knowing there would be a large piece of art to the left of it above the fireplace and in turn, any suggestions for how to pull everything together on the blank wall to the left of the fireplace. Our sofas meet perpendicularly there with an end table. It doesn’t line up perfectly.

Thanks in advance!!

What is the check mark by the post title?

The ketubah is beautiful but too large for the mantel. Anything you hang there should be no wider than the firebox opening. I have "ani dodi li, ve dodi li" on my wedding band. Since it announces the joy of the household; I think you should hang it by the door instead of the mirror. The mirror should reflect/double something that is beautiful or interesting, which it does not. Others place the ketubah in the master bedroom, also a very appropriate place to remember the vows. You could do that and leave it on the easel. The shelves you have with what appears to be a seder plate, are too crowded in that spot. Is there a larger wall unimpeded by windows?

I think that is a wonderful piece to keep on the mantle. To the right of the door I feel like two square canvases one on top of the other the top on just slightly above where the mirror hangs. And between the windows a small black framed gallery wall of family pictures would be nice. On the top rectangular shelf to the far left a plant sticking up (like grass) in a white rounded pot would go good and the shelves make another great spot to put something else special from your wedding (like say cake cutters, since it is the dining area).

    Hi bbcio-

As usual, Anglophilia is correct. Start with the rest of the room.

Or at least, what style and colors you want in the room, because if you are like most newlyweds, you aren't going to be purchasing everything you really want and like all at once because of financial considerations.

Those purchases, their styles and colors will inform what you want to do with your lovely ketubah.

There is so much to think about there- framing, matting, glazing, so many decisions!

The most important of course, is preservation. Please don't go to a chain store to frame the ketubah, or even do a DIY unless this is your metier.

In the meanwhile, please purchase an archival storage box in which to keep your ketubah, wrapped in archival tissue paper until you are ready to frame it.

I feel like a hardcore conservative or something, but my ketubah was in my parents' place, as per tradition, until we did need it here for all sorts of documents done

(well years went by and now I have lovely hand written get lol)

I guess that was info you didn't really need))

I think though-getting to more important part of my post-I think you're doing a wonderful job. Do preserve your ketuba the best you can especially if you're going to display it. It's a legal document.

Do you know what you plan to purchase, approximately? In terms of soft furnishings?

Are you going with your current vibe-which I love..I'd call it organic, maybe?

Please don't be afraid to overdo it with unique pieces..there's a way to group and display things of course, or else becomes harder to appreciate them, but I have a strong feeling you'll do just fine))

In any case hard to suggest how to style shelves if we don't know what you had in mind for them yet.

but one never went wrong with books. Some, or many-will depend on whether you have another space designated for them or not.

I have several designated spaces including library yet we still have books everywhere, since it's my weak spot..and I don't like digital format for books either.

So will depend on a person.

But several books are always fun to see, they inspire just by being a promise they are, essentially. a promise of a journey.
