The leaves look sort of like a bush allamanda, or a night-blooming jasmine.

I didn't see the 6 foot tall part. Most likely night blooming jasmine, then. Bush allamandas don't get that tall.

Thank you for the ideas. I'll get a better look at it today. It's at a new house we will be moving to. Lots of old landscaping, probably original to the house, 1999!

Night blooming jasmine nearly always looks like heck but the smell is wonderful. The cold this winter likely knocked it back but i have one in my yard original to the house and the house was built sometime in the early 1970's.

Looks just like all my potted fire spikes that are re-greening now. Don't know if fire spike in the ground gets such thick trunk(s).

I have firespike but none have trunks near this thick, Irma. I think it is probably night blooming jasmine. I cut it back, lots of dead stems/trunks, as far as I could with my loppers. Some stems were just too thick. I'm sure the new growth will quickly cover up the stems that were too big to cut.
