Kitchen Appliances

I am looking to replace my kitchen appliances in the next several months. I am looking to upgrade from my current Kenmore appliances but nothing super expensive (SubZero, Wolf, etc.).

I've started to do some research on-line. I like the GE Profile and Cafe series and think that would be a step up from what I currently have. I have also read good reviews on the KitchenAid Architect series.

My requirements are: slide-in gas range w/either single or double oven, dishwasher with drying cycle, preferably refrigerator w/o an ice maker (practically impossible to find, I know) since we don't have a water line in our kitchen, possibly a microwave with convention oven which would eliminate the need for a double oven.

Any suggestions?

This is a great site to learn about features and reliability of appliances from a seller's perspective. The authors do a good job of comparing brands and features. Their service history articles are helpful, too.

I was also looking for a fridge without an ice maker or water dispenser, so I know ones of good (or at least reasonable quality) are hard to find.......and I specifically didn't want a French door model. I like what I have now, a 33" wide KitchenAid with a bottom freezer; other than the freezer portion being a little inefficient in its design, so far, so good (it's been about 9 months).

Bosch makes great dishwashers as does Miele in the "Lexus" price point which is where you appear to be. Miele is a bit more expensive than Bosch.

For two kitchen remodels about a year apart in the duplex where we live, I went to a multi-line appliance store. One of the first questions the salesperson asked was our price range; my "upper-middle" response started the suggestions. After questions about our needs, she made some more focused suggestions, showed me the models or close proximities, and a few Consumer Reports ratings.

I also wanted a refrigerator without icemaker or water dispenser; tough to find. I found models without an external water dispenser, and simply pulled out the equipment that provide ice and chilled water. (Donated them to an architectural salvage non-profit).

One feature that is a disappointment is the cooler-temperature "steam" oven cleaning scheme.

    Just some random thoughts.

    Check out Bosch's offerings.

I agree Bosch runs some very attractive bundle pricing and their dishwashers are the best value on the market. I had an all Bosch kitchen for 10 years before I sold the house and had zero repairs. You do have to clean and maintain your appliances though.....

A lot of the slide in ranges now don't have the back part on top that stands up (with display, etc.); they are completely flat on top.

What are the pros and cons of that feature?

Still doing my research on-line; I like the slate and black stainless colors since they don't show marks and fingerprints like my current stainless does.

The black stainless is supposed to be scratched easily, so check that part out.

Please stay away from Samsung fridges. Awful experience backed up by many, many people online. They have VERY poor customer service.

Read these articles about GE and see if you want to take the chance on their products (and service). They have been bought out by a chinese company.

I was also advised against Samsung because their network of repair people is spread very thin. This could be subject to regional differences but I am in Los Angeles and was told this by some knowledgable people.

Yale Appliance says fridges are the most services category of appliances. So you won’t find a fridge that doesn’t have service calls, probably. Some are better than others. Our LG used biodegradable water lines that literally disintegrated after 8 years. Also, the fridge couldn’t keep its temp. We switched to Sub Zeros, and have none of those issues.

I'd suggest that you start with Consumer Reports to help you see what the various manufacturers offer at different price points and how they performed in CR testing. Consumer Reports also will give you some high level reliability statistics for each manufacturer and for each type of appliance. Once you narrow down your choices to a few models for each type of appliance, then go read online owner reviews to learn more about the specific things owners of those models like and dislike about them.

YouTube is another good resouce if you want to see more of what the appliance looks like and hear people talk about their appliances. Just do a search on YouTube by the manufacturer and model number since some owners have posted video reviews there. Reviewed.com also has some helpful information, but I don't trust it as much as CR. The Yale Appliance Blog was helpful too, especially their reliability statistics on various appliance manufacturers by appliance type.

Thanks to everyone for all the comments.

I have looked on YouTube a couple of times for appliance reviews and it is very helpful.

I've never heard of "Reviewed.com" but have bookmarked the page and will check it out.

I used all GE Profile appliances in my apartment remodel 10 years ago and thus far they have held up very well (even with renters now abusing them!). I did have to have a part replaced on the fridge last year, but no other issues. I recently replaced my range in our new home and and went with the GE Cafe series slide-in range:

    https://www.goedekers.com/GE-CGS995SELSS.html

I have had it for several months and I love it. The edge-to-edge cooking layout really gives you a LOT more space for large pots and pans, as does the lack of that bulky back panel display that you get on a freestanding range (it also looks WAY cooler!). I use the power burners more than anything else, and they are fabulous - really even cooking. The center griddle is fantastic as well. The double ovens have taken some getting used to but I like them a lot as well. The top one is perfect for a single sheet tray of anything and heats up in a snap.

I'm not a slave to brands nor matching appliances and when we eventually have to replace our fridge and DW, I will definitely consider other brands, but my experience with GE has been very positive.

I did two condos with GE profile appliances. Have had no trouble with any of them. Now, since the company was sold, stores are steering us away from GE. Any comments?
