Right now we have the following salvia's : Amistad, Phyllis's Fancy, Fay Chapel and Cocciena !!!

We also have tropical morning glory, passion vine, lion's ear, coral honeysuckle, firecracker, canna, hibiscus, purple and coral porter weed ( red are almost ready to bloom ), cosmos, lantana, lavender firespike, shrimp plant, tropical milkweed, cape daisy and red, pink and lilac penta's !

Our magnolia's are loaded with buds ( and Miller Lite's ! ) : ) The self-seeded Mexican sunflowers are popping up all over the garden !

I'm sure there's more...... LOL

Have talked the bananas, grapefruits and mangos to death,...so will not go there !!! ( smile )

And I can never tired of talking edibles, right now I am harvesting some beautiful onions and peppers for a stew and I will also make a very tasty salad for dinner, can never ever tired of veggies or my best dessert, fresh fruit.

I was comparing my garden to the blooms at the Bok Tower since we are in the same zone, it is always good to learn the way they arrange the plants, I was surprised to see a lot of begonias on the ground, mine are in pots, not enough shade in my place.

Not much here I'm afraid, still mostly cool season plants (Radish, Mustard, Borage which is both seasons but I grow as a cool season, Snaps, violets+pansies..)

Everything else:

Blue-eyed grass 'Suwanee' in shade (ones in sun are blooming too but I've left that area weedy until I'm ready to plant more stuff) has been blooming since late February. very cute native evergreen short groundcover

One of my red Trumpet honeysuckle's is flowering which the arriving hummingbirds appreciate.

Signet Marigold 'Tangerine Gem' started from seed in Feb. It's a nice saffron golden orange (photo is in harsh light)

Blue milkweed + 'Tango' agastache from seed

Salvia greggii 'Rose Pink' is one of the earlier-flowering members of its species

I haven't been to Bok Tower since I was a young child. I want to go again!

I have a planter filled w/ spilanthes that won't quit. Some call it 'toothache plant' or 'eyeball plant' and it's a good herb for colds & flu, since it's supposedly an antiviral. It creates a strong tingling sensation when chewed and really seems to make a cold or flu go away fast. I harvest the flower heads and store them in my freezer for future illnesses.

There is also a lot of blue mistflower, which I love the scent of.

My chickasaw plum just finished blooming, as did my citrus trees and Walter's viburnum. I also spied some buds on my sambac jasmine.

I just planted some dinner plate dahlias and they are sprouting. Blooms will be forthcoming, but not for some time.

1 of my pineapples has put forth a flower - yippee!

I have several tomato volunteers that are really taking off and setting lots of fruits. I've already harvested 8 or 9 of them. So grateful that I did not have to do much to get them. Some of the vines are already over 5 feet long

Jay, the yellow flower is some kind of orchid, probably the orchid experts can remember the name. I got closer to see it but I forgot already.:)

Your flowers look really nice and starting from seed is very rewarding, you have some nice colors there too.

One thing that I noticed yesterday at the garden was that they had different colors put together and everything look pretty.

Love to keep flowers for the bees and the hummingbirds.

I thought about planting sunflowers that are not too tall, after I saw this at the Bok.

Hi Carol, you are keeping busy with all your garden duties and I am glad that you are harvesting tomatoes the easy way...

You have to get to the Bok again, it is so worth it! and more when you have a garden membership like we have at the Leu, we get in for free, what is better than that! Depending on the season the view changes but it is always beautiful no matter when you go.

Haha - my son is named Joseph and he also said 'Jofus' when he was tiny.

vm168, Carol : A great coincidence ! My first name is Joseph, so when my 4th child was born ( in eastern Saudi Arabia yet ) we named him Joseph as well ! The cute little guy also had a problem pronouncing his name,...it was always " Jofus " for his first 3 + yrs, to everyone's great delight !!
When I was thinking of an " alias " for this site, I also smiled as the name popped into my head ! : )

That is a good coincidence to the name, that show us that we are more alike than different.:)

Carol, if you or anyone wants to visit the gardens, I highly recommend a place to eat around the area, it was in Emeryl's Florida program and the seafood is so fresh and a good value. What we did not spend at the entrance fee, we spend it at the food, vintage Florida for sure!

Jay, the golden plant in the pot is Dendrobium lindleyi

I was going to guess Dendrobium agregatum. Mine is in bud right now. I don't have that many spikes on mine but, I am still looking forward to the sprays of yellow flowers.

Years ago I talked Hubby into going to Bok Tower - I loved it, he hated it. Right now things are still recovering from the freezes, we lost a lot this year. I'm still in the progress of clearing out the dead stuff. But the Coral Honeysuckle and the Bottlebrush trees are blooming like crazy. That's about it.

Florida_Joes, meg_w, the mystery is over.:) I went back to the photo and made it bigger to see the name and it says Dendrobium aggregatum.

Hi Rita! I am just like you, I love to walk around the Bok Tower, I always see something different that I can learn and oh what a wonderful smell of a lot of flowers!

I saw some freeze damage at the Bok, we are all still recovering, the weather sometimes is in a seesaw mood.:)

I also have a Coral honeysuckle and a Bottlebrush tree and like you I am enjoying the blooms, what a rewarding and easy care they are.

I trimmed my Meyer lemon yesterday, I have so much fruit! no matter that I keep using them and giving them away....

Most everything in my yard is done blooming but between the apples, pears, peaches, and citrus it was a good bloom. I do have 1 thing in full bloom right now.

That is some huge bloom! I am sure the bees are zooming around and happy and you will be too after collecting the seeds.

I walk the garden every day and see what needs to be done, pick weeds, harvest, check for bugs, good time to enjoy the new blooms!

vml68, I learned how to grow the plants but I don't pay attention to the names unless is an edible and I want to plant it again.:)

Don't keep journals either, that reminds me that it used to come to the garden parties a gardener that had albums with the info on all her cuttings, now that is a labor of love!

There were so many cuttings to plant that I cannot remember how long they took to grow, only if they became too big for my garden. A lot of plants are quick to re produce and like that bromeliad I had to make a circle for them to grow under the avocado tree.

Dendrobium lindleyi and Dendrobium aggregatum is the same plant. I think It was changed to lindleyi though or Lindleyi is more the official botanical name.

Florida_Joes, thank you for clarifying the name of that orchid and you are right, when I google the name that is exactly what it says. I learned something new every day!

Anyways, I just wanted to tell ya that the bromeliads under the tree are called Matchsticks. Pretty cool, huh?

That orchid is Dendrobium aggregatum. Mine is in bloom now but much smaller. They can be difficult for many to bloom so the typical name is Dend Aggravation!

I find growing them in Florida is very easy and they require little care.

I keep track of everything edible in the garden so later I can go and play in the kitchen, busy with the food and looking at the flowers.

My Matchstick Bromiliad (thanks for the name!) blooms red - like the photo above. The pics on line are hot pink with purple tips. Is this due to amount of sunlight (mine are in shade, rarely watered, and only bloom once a year - in late summer) or (and) soil/fertilizer type?

Irma, mine are about the same color like the picture below, it probably has to do with the sun exposure, mine blooms few times a year and it gets whatever fertilizer I use on the avocado tree since it is around there, gets some sun and some shade depending on the time of the day, I would say it is more of a magenta tone that really red.
