There could be several things going on here. The soil appears to have fertilizer salt accumulation. Remove dead or dying leaves first. Then flush with plain warm (just above room temperature or so) water and blot on paper towels over newspapers on trays to remove excess. Lower humidity might help as certain pests which can destroy centers flourish in high humidity. Put just a few drops of isopropyl alcohol (70% or less) in the centers in case it might be a pest problem. Blot away excess with toilet tissue. Use a fan for proper air ventilation if one is not near your plants already. Some should regrow their centers. Others might not, take a leaf and clean with warm soapy water as insurance for your favorites

First thing I would do is take off good leaves and plant them for insurance.

Getting back to basics,,,,what type of soil mix are they in??? I do agree that the perlite shows signs of fertilizer damage.

I know you are not totally inexperienced so I have to ask. Could you have potted them a little too deep?

When you put them back into the humidity, maybe it was too high, especially if you watered the transplants before you did it. Just a guess.

For just the centers to die, I wonder if there could have been a bug, but I can't say for sure. I would think everything would be compromised if it were a bug.

So based on that,,,,I don't know. Wish I could help, but for goodness sake,,,start all the little leaves you can!!!! Good luck and good to hear from you again!!!! Rosie

The perlite is the miracle gro kind so it must have had fertilizer in it. I haven't fertilized them myself yet. I'll try flushing them... and I may repotting them again, if they keep on with this. :|

Indeed it does. I don't know if MG makes any product that does not contain their fertilizer.

A while back, I got onto a tear, regarding MG products. When I first started growing AV's that was all I could find in the BBS. I had all kinds of problems w over fertilization or under fertilization. I joined this forum because of the problems.

Come to find out, everything that has their name on it, has their fert in it. Yikes, I was using their products and adding additional fertilizer to boot. I burned the heck out of a whole bunch of AV's going that route.

I learned here about alternatives to the MG products and it has been clear sailing ever since.

Having said that, there are those that have mastered the unmeasurable use of MG products and have managed to grow and maintain beautiful plants using them. I never got the knack.

Hey Jeff!!! I use the MG and I guess it works for me because (more than a little embarrassed to admit this) I am VERY forgetful to fertilize! lol And I grow on wicks! I know,,,,shame on me!!!! Rosie.

I have no problem using miracle gro AV soil and perlite. Well, these are the only resources I can find in my neighborhood. Before, I also used miracle gro AV plant food and it burnt the AV. So I switched to optimara fertilizer and my AV are happily ever after.

Thank you! I wondered maybe if it was the transplant shock, Irena. I remembered someone (maybe you) mentioning this at a different time. As I was flushing these, I did realize that some were too low in the soil and edged them up a bit. My bad... I repotted these when I was a week over due with my fourth child. :].

Lighting... these are in a south window. They don't get direct sun, because of the cracked open shades. This has been more than sufficient for the 3+ years I've grown at this window. :)

As far as over potted... these are 2" pots... I don't have any smaller.

Here's some more photos of random ones after I flushed the soil. The humidity is at anywhere from 45% to 65% at this window. (Window is in a master bedroom adjoining a bathroom... thus the fluctuation. :) )

The one above looked gorgeous before I transplanted it. :( it's one of the worse looking ones now. I had mostly Macs, Russians, and trailers in this tray... very valuable to me! I think I will do like Rosie suggested and take cuttings from them all. Just in case.

Congratulations on your newest child! Boy? I am no expert, but the top one looks like it needs more light. By any chance, is the water you are using free of softeners or chloramine? Chemicals in the water combined with subdued winter light can result in that look, with teensy crowns.

No, we have just nice country well water. It has nAtural minerals etc in it but nothing else. :)

Rosie,yes indeed! It's a crazy stage at times but I am loving it!

That's why violets have taken a back burner. I have about 5 standards right now. . But a good selection of about 25 minis. :) down to five streps and two orchids... and just a handful of other favorite house plants. It's good tho. A very manageable selection. :D and tis the season for violets in the garden centers, so we probably won't stay at 5 standards!! :D
