how would you improve this dining room?

I’d like suggestions on how to improve my dining room

I think you are off to a great start. I would replace the centerpiece and remove the rug. That's it. I love the chair combo and the art.

Thank you! I struggle with my centerpiece, any suggestions?

Fill it with food, friends, and family! It needs nothing else :-)

I would leave the rug personally; I think it supports the southwestern theme.

I am on my way to a chandelier change already! I agree it needs to match my style I have going, thanks!

Also, I have a rectangle basket, but what do I put in it??

I like having a basket of cloth napkins on my table. You could roll some and stand them in it.

Or you could get a couple more plants similar to the one you have, and put them in the basket (in their pots).

or nothing................let's see your basket plz

Can't wait to see your chandelier choices!

The basket is very nice on the table, and I like the plant, but perhaps adding two more plants would be even better. The dark curtains make the dining room look smaller than it is. I would get curtains that are close to the color of the wall so that it practically disappears. Also, please make sure it's the proper length, just barely reaching the floor. The rug is nice but seems a little too small for this area, making the dining section look less significant than it should be. Otherwise I think this looks very nice.

I'd love to see a view from farther back to see the surrounding area, but my initial thought is that I might try the rug and table running the other direction. Can't tell from this view though. And I agree with a trying a lighter color drapery.

One last thing...even though your chairs are nice, I think they are too short for the table, while the head chairs are are quite tall. Someday, if it's in the budget, I'd get chairs more medium height on the sides, so there isn't such a disparity in heights.

    Ignore the mess

Oh, that little table is adorable! Thanks for the other view. Looks like you probably have it arranged the best direction. While you were doing that I was looking at basket centerpiece ideas. Of course, everything with baskets is all Easter right now, but I did see this...while I prefer a basket filled with something, dried flowers, fruit or whatever, I thought this kind of carried your SW theme well. These are air plants, available everywhere these days. Not at all expensive:

One more with greens...might be a little too Christmasy, but simple and nice:

Really nice room ... except (and this is a pet peeve of mine) ... drapes dragging the floor look is so very sloppy looking. Hem the drapes so they are only 1/4" off the floor -- but definitely off the floor -- and then add curtains to the window to match them.

Agree that a wood tray -- or even just a pretty pot alone -- for your table centerpiece to replace the ... cotton? ... would be a good idea. You could set it on a table runner, preferably one with a bit of the same color as your drapes within it.

As we tweak along...........I think your basket is a bit too big- a runner would pull everything - try and find one in a natural fiber in the tan/cream family to coordinate with your rug and chairs. Then just put 3 cacti in matching containers on the runner in a line.

Try switching the fur piece to a chair where you can see it.....

A chandelier is more for a formal dining room. A ceiling fan with light that would compliment your southwest vibe would serve you better.

Leave the blinds for light and privacy control as needed but match window and patio door coverings (Guessing that's a patio door?). If you stitch/pin the top to stay together to cover the top of the blinds when they're pulled all the way up when not needed and add tie backs to open any curtain/drapes so some light could come in that would work.

    Just an aside.

I just learned from Facebook what an aloe bud/stalk looks like. Mine have never bloomed; hope yours does.

In my experience, the larger the pot the larger the aloe gets; the deeper the pot the deeper the plant root goes and the taller the plant gets.

Also, if yours gets too big for your table, break a "limb" off and put it in sandy soil you keep moist and it will root (or, at least, it worked for me). Keep the original plant for another place.

As for the center arrangement on your table, a lot of people like groupings of three. Perhaps a potted flower, a matching or at least coordinating pot with cloth napkins and a candle holder that "works" (visually) with the pots as a 3 piece grouping.

Can you move the entire arrangement toward the kitchen slightly? I don't like how close the end chair is to the wall or that the rug is touching the wall. Just a couple inches would do.

I like the basket much better as the centerpiece. Olychick's ideas look nice. The little house and candle feel more like shelf or coffee table decor than dining table decor.

Love the sheepskin on the chair! I would definitely pick that chair if I was eating over. Looks comfy and it softens all the hard edges a bit.

Table is going to need to stay centered beneath the overhead light to look right.

Sue I moved the table before and it off centers it too much from the light, I agree I’d prefer it away from the wall more, maybe a shorter rug?
Also I put the sheepskin there originally to soften the room a bit, I think I still might try to figure something out with that. every plant in my house is real but the aloe haha. I will shorten the curtains and maybe a better word is ‘light fixture’ for over the table. Thanks everyone!

You could move the overhead light by creating a wood box to attach to the ceiling so it is centered above where you want to place your table, creating a dropped area in your ceiling.

The wood box for your dropped ceiling would need to be large enough to cover the electrical box of both where the light now hangs and where you want to add the new light. You'd need to make certain it is secured to ceiling joists and that the electrical box you put in it is the right kind for the kind of light you want. A ceiling fan may require a metal electrical box rather than the more common plastic ones.

You'd paint the wood box drop ceiling the same color as your ceiling or just paint the frame and use another material -- something that would tend to emphasize the feature.

I have a similar color table, although mine is reclaimed wood, and I keep a fresh lavender plant in a plain terra cotta pot in the center. It's fragrant and looks so fresh and natural it makes the whole dining area come alive. I think something like that, rather than your aloe vera is the ticket. Put vera in your bathroom, near the window or light fixture.

I love that ideas, thank you Judrand05

    Just an idea

I have some paper mache fruit from Mexico that I sometimes put on my table as a centerpiece. I bought mine at Fonart in Mexico City.

    Better?

That's pretty and more substantial in size.

I think you’re trying too hard to get an “arrangement”. How about a big, unique bowl...with or without some fresh fruit. A beautiful bowl can stand on its own as art, or be useful. Here are just some ideas I found on Etsy, but my own stuff I’ve just stumbled across at flea markets, rummage sales, etc.

Either way, try a runner to anchor your centerpiece
